Spurs under 18’s 2-4 Arsenal under 18’s: (match report)

IMG_1789.JPG

On Saturday our under 18’s side lost 4-2 to Arsenal at Hotspur way, in the first North London derby of the season as John McDermott’s side were desperately unlucky not to have gotten at least a point from Saturdays match. The Gunners started the match well attacking with real intent causing our defence multiple problems. On 16 minutes goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman was forced in to making two excellent saves. Firstly, Whiteman blocked Coyle’s effort before making an exceptional save to deny Da Silva’s effort from 20 yards after he threw himself to the floor to make an excellent reflex save to turn away the ball behind. Despite being on the back foot for the majority of the first half, McDermott’s side grew into the game and after creating a couple of good chances, Spurs took the lead on the stroke of halftime through Reo Griffith’s. The goal came about following a good move which started in the midfield with Oliver Skipp who picked out Shashoua who put in an intelligent pass to Griffiths who one on one rounded Virginia and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Arsenal equalised 15 minutes into the second half after Pileas netted at the back post following a corner kick. A mere five minutes later the Gunners doubled their lead through Chris Willock after the forward netted from inside the box. However, just three minutes later Griffiths got us level with his second goal of the game, after the striker got on the end of the bouncing ball inside the penalty area, before nudging the ball past Virginia and into the back of the net. The game seemed to be heading for a draw but on 89 minutes Arsenal got a late winner courtesy of a goal from Chris Willock. Willock capitalised after Jack Roles was brought down near the half way line with the referee waving play on Willock surged forward down the left wing before firing the ball into back of the net. Deep in stoppage time Arsenal put the game out of sight after Coyle received the ball on the left side of the box before slotting the ball past Whiteman and into the back of the net. The result was cruel on Spurs as I felt the lads really deserved a draw however, regardless of the result there were plenty of very good individual performances from this talented group of youngsters and many positives to take. Bearing in minds Arsenal’s under 18 side are one of the best in the country and are currently top of the league.

Japhet Tanganga and Reo Griffiths were our two best players, Tanganga put in a magnificent job at the centre of defence making some key challenges and interceptions, the England youth international came off through injury late in the second half at which point we were level with the gunners. However, shortly afterwards the young lillywhites conceded two late goals, showing Tanganga’s importance to the game. 16 year old striker Reo Griffiths continued his excellent start to life as an under 18’s player with a brace, the highly talented striker was clinical and powerful, as he worked tirelessly up front for the entirety of the game. Another player who impressed was highly rated goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman, Whiteman made a string of fantastic saves in the first half and his commanding presence in the box as well as his vocalness and leadership were extremely impressive. Meanwhile, Jaden Brown had a good game at left back, whilst midfielder George Marsh had a fine game, working tirelessly in the centre of midfield.

IMG_1792.JPG

My man of the match: Japhet Tanganga. The centre back who made his first start of the season against Arsenal on Saturday, is one of our best defensive prospects in the academy, Tanganga was superb against Arsenal and his decision making was top draw as were his numerous tackles and interceptions.

Spurs U18s: Whiteman, Hinds, Brown, Marsh (c), Tanganga (Dinzeyi 84), Eyoma, Oakley-Boothe, Skipp (Roles 73), Griffiths, Duncan, Shashoua (Tsaroulla 66). Substitutes (not used): Oteh, Austin (GK).

Later today Spurs face league leaders Manchester City at the lane in what will undoubtedly be the Lillywhites toughest game of the season so far. Mauricio Pochettino’s side face Pep Guardiola’s in form blues who have started the season exceptional fashion under the Spaniard, Man City have started the league campaign in perfect fashion with six wins from six matches and have at times seemed unstoppable going forward. City’s possession based style of play combined withtheir potent attack will cause us problems, the pace and trickery of Raheem Sterling, the creativity of David Silva, as well as the clinical nature of Sergio Agüero will all be massive obstacles to overcome. However, Pochettino’s young side have demonstrated their resilience on many occasions and with Son on top form as well as a whole host of other players, we may just maybe defeat Man City for a second season in a row. COYS
Team news: Harry Kane is again ruled out through an ankle injury, whilst Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembélé and Moussa Sissoko are all doubts through injury.
My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Alli, Son, Janssen.

My predicted scoreline: 3-1 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Son x2 and Dele Alli. Man City’s defence isn’t their strong point, and Guardiola’s side have shown their vulnerability at the back conceding three goals to Celtic in midweek. I have a feeling that our sides tireless work rate will catch Man City’s defence out, and I reckon that the highly energetic Son can impress further for Spurs, and the South Korean international certainly has the capability to do so this afternoon.

One to watch: One of the Worlds most talented strikers, Sergio Agüero.

Head2Heads: 4-1 Spurs, 2-1 Middlesbrough, 1-1, 1-1, 2-0 Spurs.

This afternoon Spurs face Middlesbrough at the Riverside stadium as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look to extend their unbeaten run in the premier league so far this season. Fresh from their 5-0 victory over Gillingham on Wednesday, the Lillywhites side will look a lot different this afternoon with many senior squad members returning to action following them being rested for Wednesdays league cup tie at the lane. Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough have only won one once in their last five matches and the newly promoted side struggled against Everton last Saturday losing 3-1 at Goodison park. The Boro do have a potent attack with experienced Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo leading the line, whilst the North Yorkshire club also have the likes of Stuani, Ramírez and Downing as well as the talented defender Ben Gibson. The lads will have their work cut out today but we are undoubtedly the better side and providing we start well we should defeat Middlesbrough this afternoon. COYS

Harry Kane is ruled out through injury whilst Moussa Dembele, Eric Dier and Danny Rose are all doubts with a hamstring injury.
My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Alli, Son, Janssen.

My predicted scoreline: 3-0 to Spurs courtesy of goal from Eriksen, Son and Janssen.

Head2Heads: Spurs 4-2 (1982)

Tomorrow night spurs are in action against Gillingham in a third round EFL tie at the lane, it will be a special occasion for the Gills boss Justin Edinburgh as he returns to the stadium where he played many times for spurs during the 1990’s. Spurs boss Maurico Pochettino has the tough task of picking tomorrow’s team which will be a hard one as our squad is now so big in depth with many players having not played for the lillywhites so far this season. Regardless of what team Pochettino decides to pick, Gillingham will provide tough opposition and the league one side should not be underestimated. We last played Gillingham coincidentally in the third round of the league cup in 1982, and on that night we defeated the Gills 4-2 courtesy of braces from Steve Archibald and Garth Crooks. Pochettino spoke yesterday of the importance of this competition and I am sure that he will field a strong squad this evening that should defeat the Kent club. It’s likely to be a mixture of senior squad members and youth players with talented youngsters Harry Winks and Cameron Carter-Vickers likely to start their first games for Spurs. Also talented youth players Marcus Edwards and Anton Walkes could feature on the bench.

Gillingham have two ex Spurs players on their books, Paul Konchesky and Jamie O’Hara, whilst their young and talented midfielder Emmanuel Osadebe attended the Tottenham Hotspur college foundation prior to joining the Gills in 2015. Former Arsenal forward Jay Emmanuel Thomas is one of the Gills biggest goal threats whilst Rory Donnelly and Bradley Dack are also players to watch out for. Hopefully the lads will go far in this competition and provide some great league cup memories in our final season at the lane. COYS⚽️

Team news: Danny Rose and Harry Kane are ruled out through injury, whilst midfielders Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele who came off injured against Sunderland on Sunday are unlikely to be risked tonight. Young striker Shayon Harrison would have been in contention for his competitive debut for Spurs this evening, but the 19 year old picked up a groin injury and has been ruled out of the match.
My predicted lineup: Vorm, Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies, Winks, Wanyama, Lamela, Carroll, Onomah, Janssen

My predicted scoreline: 5-1 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Lamela x2, Janssen, Onomah and Edwards.

One to watch: Gillingham’s talented midfielder Bradley Dack, who has an excellent shot at his disposal.

IMG_1700.JPG

Spurs kicked off their Champions league campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Monaco in front of a club record 85,000 strong crowd at Wembley stadium on Tuesday evening. It was a highly disappointing result for the Lillywhites as Monaco frustrated Pochettino’s side from the minute go, the well structured French side were incredibly solid and despite the lads best efforts we just couldn’t find the all important equaliser. We started the game encouragingly in the opening minutes and shortly before 10 minutes we almost took an early through Son, after the South Korean international latched on to a pass inside the box before unleashing a shot which was deflected away on the line by a Moncao defender. However, just six minutes later the Ligue 1 side stunned the Lillywhites by taking the lead through Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese winger went on a darting run before cutting inside Vertonghen and firing the ball past Lloris and into the top left hand corner of the net. Lamela almost made an instant reply for Spurs two minutes later after the Argentine struck a fine effort from the edge of the box which was heading for the bottom left hand corner of the net, though Danijel Subasic denied Lamela with a good save.

IMG_1701.JPG

The crowd were shocked on the half hour mark as Monaco doubled their lead through substitute Thomas Lemar, after the unmarked youngster got on to the rebound in the area following a save from Lloris and the Frenchman fired the ball superbly into the top of the net to double the visitors advantage. Our effort and attacking prowess finally paid off as in stoppage of the first half the Lillywhites got a goal back through Toby Alderweireld. Following the resulting corner from Lamela, Alderweireld rose high to plant a powerful header into the back of the net to give us great hope at the interval. The lads started the second half well and went close to getting level on the 48th minute after Dele Alli hit a testing effort from outside the box but Subasic tipped Alli’s powerful effort over the crossbar. In the minutes that followed the lads just couldn’t get past a stubborn Monaco side and despite everything Spurs threw at them, the French side continually found a way to deny us. Of all the chances Spurs had in the second half their best of all came to Harry Kane in the 79th minute. Following some good work from Janssen, the Dutchman set up Kane who inside the box seemed destined to get the equaliser but Kane powered his shot straight in to the arms of Subasic It was a disappointing end to a historic night, I believe that playing at Wembley affected our performance and style of play. Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle who was on ITV on Thursday spoke of the difficulty that Spurs face in containing their opponents in regards to their high pressing style of play. Despite the result I am still confident that we will adjust to the 90,000 capacity stadium and I also believe that we will top the group. Pochettino’s lads go again on Sunday as they face Sunderland at the Lane.

Spurs (4-2-3-1): Lloris (c); Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier (Sissoko 81), Alli; Lamela (Janssen 71), Eriksen, Son (Dembele 46); Kane. Substitutes (not used): Vorm, Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wanyama.

It’s been five seasons since Spurs were last involved in the UEFA champions league but tomorrow under Mauricio Pochettino, the Lillywhites will face AS Monaco at Wembley stadium in their first group game of the campaign. We face a Monaco side that has much improved following our last encounter with the French club in last seasons UEFA Europa league where we comfortably defeated them 4-1 at the lane. However, this time round things are different, Les Rouges et Blancs are a stronger side and have started the season well having won five of their last six games in all competitions. Needless to say the Lillywhites task will be much tougher than last time round. Monaco have a mixture of experienced players of top class pedigree as well as a host of younger talents within their side such as pacy Portuguese winger Bernardo Silva. The Ligue 1 side have a strong defence, following the signing of tenacious central defender Kamil Glik from Torino they have not conceded few goals so far this season and will be hard to break down especially if they sit back and go for the draw. Despite Leonardo Jardim’s sides quality, we are the better side and I expect us to defeat the Ligue 1 side, as I strongly believe our quality will shine through in front of a roaring 80,000 plus crowd under the lights at Wembley stadium with a sea of Lillywhite shirts present. COYS⚽️

Team news: Danny Rose is our only absentee, the left back who picked up a hamstring problem on international duty is close to returning but will not feature tomorrow. Meanwhile, Moussa Dembele is in contention to start tomorrow’s game following a six game domestic ban but I reckon Pochettino will favour Victor Wanyama for tomorrow’s match as the Belgian international is lacking in game time, but the highly influential Dembele will undoubtedly return very soon to the centre of midfield, possibly against Sunderland on Sunday.
My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Wanyama, Lamela, Alli, Eriksen, Kane.

My predicted scoreline: 3-1 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane x2.

One to watch: Radamel Falcao, the experienced 30 year old is a prolific and world class striker and despite his injury problems the Colombian international will pose a real threat in front of goal.

Will Miller: Will Miller scored a dramatic equaliser in the 93rd minute of stoppage time for Burton Albion earlier today as the Brewers drew 1-1 with Wolves. Will Miller came on as a 77th minute substitute for the championship and the talented forward is already showing his talent at Burton.

Luke McGee and Nathan Oduwa: 21 year old goalkeeper Luke McGee played the entirety of Peterborough’s 2-2  draw with Port Vale this afternoon. Meanwhile winger Nathan Oduwa was an unused substitute for the posh.

Filip Lesniak: Filip Lesniak wasn’t included in the squad for Czech side Slovan Liberec’s 2-1 defeat to Viktoria Plzen this evening.

Referee: Anthony Taylor

Spurs return to action tomorrow afternoon following a two week international break, as Maurico Pochettino’s side face Stoke City at the Bet365 stadium. After picking up five points from three league games so far this season, the lillywhites will be eager to win this encounter against the potters with the lads having one of their best performances against Mark Hughes ‘s side last season. Following the arrival of three players on transfer deadline day, we now have the depth that we need to challenge for the league title for a second consecutive season. The potters haven’t started the season well having picked up only one point from their first three league matches, yet their talented attack including new signing Wilfried Bony will make them a danger throughout. Despite our poor form against Stoke in recent seasons I still believe that our lads will defeat them tomorrow and taking an early lead could prove imperative. One of stokes most important players Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri is ruled out off tomorrow’s game through injury.

Team news: Hugo Lloris has recovered well from his injury and will lead us out tomorrow. However, Danny Rose is ruled out due to a hamstring injury, Ben Davies will likely deputise. Meanwhile, Mousa Dembele is serving his sixth and final suspension of his six game ban tomorrow.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Dier, Son, Alli, Eriksen, Kane.

My predicted scoreline: 2-0 spurs courtesy of goals from Eriksen and Kane.

One to watch: Stokes new signing, striker Wilfried Bony.

Tomorrow evening our under 23’s side face Chelsea under 23’s in a premier league 2 encounter at Stamford Bridge against the blues. Ugo Ehiogu’s side have started the season well with two wins from three games in the newly set up PL2. However, the young Lillywhites will face one of their toughest games of the campaign tomorrow as they face one of the most talented academy sides in Europe, in Chelsea. Tomorrows game regardless of the result will provide Ehiogu’s side with valuable experience which will undoubtedly help them in their future development in the game. Our highly talented squad have the quality and ability to defeat the hosts tomorrow night in front of a fairly big crowd and it will be exciting to see how the young Lillywhites fair at the Bridge.
