Spurs Under 21’s 0-3 Peterborough United: (match report)

Spurs’ Under 21 side faced League One side Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium, on Tuesday night, in what was Spurs’ second group game of the 2022/23 edition of the Papa John’s Trophy. Wayne Burnett’s Spurs side lost the game 3-0. Spurs lined-up with Adam Hayton in goal, while Maxwell McKnight, Marqes Muir, Malachi Fagan-Walcott and Will Andiyapan started in defence. Harvey White and Spurs’ captain Nile John started in central midfield, with Yago Santiago and Romaine Mundle starting out on the flanks, either side of CAM Max Robson. Jaden Williams led the line for Spurs, who got the game underway. After getting past Marqes Muir on the left flank, Ricky-Jade Jones managed to find Jonson Clarke-Harris inside the Spurs penalty area. However, Clarke-Harris’ effort went over the Spurs goal. Jonson Clarke-Harris headed over Joe Ward’s cross, before Romaine Mundle then had an effort blocked at the other end of the pitch.

After going into the Spurs box Ricky-Jade Jones had an effort on goal deflected behind, off of Marqes Muir. Peterborough had started the game well, and on 19 minutes they took the lead. Adam Hayton was unable to gather Kwame Poku’s corner-kick, as Joe Ward was then able to head the ball into the Spurs goal, 0-1. After going on a good run with the ball Romaine Mundle had an effort blocked by Frankie Kent. After turning with the ball Jonson Clarke-Harris had an effort from distance saved by Adam Hayton. Peterborough made it 2-0 shortly after, as Kwame Poku’s low cross from the right flank found Jack Taylor, whose effort from inside the Spurs box was saved by Adam Hayton, before Ricky-Jade Jones was able to finish from close range, 0-2. Adam Hayton was able to save a low effort from distance, before at the other end of the pitch, Romaine Mundle hit a low effort wide of the Peterborough goal, also from distance.

Kwame Poku volleyed an effort just wide of the Spurs goal, from Joe Ward’s cross, as Peterborough continued to be the better team. After receiving the ball inside the Spurs box, Jack Taylor turned with the ball, before hitting an effort on goal, which Adam Hayton saved, with Jonson Clarke-Harris then hitting an effort over the Spurs goal. Late on in the first half Adam Hayton did well to gather the ball from the feet of Jonson Clarke-Harris, before the referee sounded his whistle for half-time. Peterborough got the second half underway, and they soon extended their lead. After Yago Santiago had lost the ball, Jack Marriott went forward with the ball into the Spurs box, before curling a fine effort into the top right corner of Adam Hayton’s goal, 0-3. George Abbott came on to replace the injured Will Andiyapan, before Romaine Mundle had an effort from distance blocked.

Adam Hayton did well to save an effort from Jack Marriott inside the Spurs penalty area, after Spurs had given the ball away. Brooklyn Lyons-Foster came on to replace Max Robson, and then the alert Adam Hayton saved Kwame Poku’s effort from distance. The 18 year old Spurs goalkeeper then managed to save Jack Marriott’s clever volleyed effort on goal. Nile John had an effort blocked inside the Peterborough box, with Spurs then making further changes. As Damola Ajayi and Roshaun Mathurin came on to replace Jaden Williams and Nile John, respectively. Kwame Poku had an effort saved from the edge of the Spurs penalty area by Adam Hayton. The Spurs goalkeeper then saved well from Joe Taylor’s effort on the right side of the Spurs box. Joel Randall hit an effort just wide, after meeting a low cross inside the Spurs box, as the game started to come to an end.

George Abbott and Romaine Mundle both hit efforts over the Peterborough goal in quick succession, before the referee brought the game to an end. Spurs’ Under 21 side now don’t have a game until the 30th of September, when they face Brighton & Hove Albion (away) in the Premier League 2.

My Spurs player of the match – Maxwell McKnight. On his debut for the Spurs Under 21 side, the player who has so often played as a winger for the Spurs Under 18 side over the past year had in my opinion an impressive game, firstly at right-back, and then later at left-back, after Will Andiyapan had picked up an injury. Considering that this was his first ever appearance for the Spurs Under 21 side, the talented 17 year old showed fine defensive reading of the game. Maxwell has already made five competitive appearances for the Spurs Under 18 side, so far this season. Also, Romaine Mundle was in my opinion Spurs’ best forward during the game, as he showed some really good skill and pace on occasions, impressing whenever he got on the ball.

Spurs Under 21’s versus Peterborough United: (match preview)

Spurs’ Under 21 side face League One side Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium, in their second group game of the 2022/23 edition of the Papa Johns Trophy, on Tuesday night (the game starts at 19:30pm). Spurs lost 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers at Hotspur Way on Saturday, in their most recent Premier League 2 fixture. However, the side that started that game for Spurs, could be quite different to the side that starts against Peterborough United tomorrow, because of international call-ups. Spurs played really well, and they also defended really well against Wycombe Wanderers, in their first group game of the competition. And a similar performance against a Peterborough side who have lost their last six matches, could see Spurs get a good result tomorrow, as they look to progress out of their group. Peterborough are a talented team however, and this will be far from an easy game for Spurs, against a senior side. However, I would like to wish the Spurs team all the very best of luck for the game.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Keeley, Cesay, Fagan-Walcott, Muir, Lyons-Foster, White, John (c), Santiago, Robson, Mundle, Williams.

Subs from: Hayton, Abbott, Linton, McKnight, Hall, Akhamrich, Mathurin.

Injured/unavailable: N/A.

Doubtful: Tyrell Ashcroft (injury), Aaron Maguire (international call-up), Jamie Donley (international call-up), Kallum Cesay (international call-up), Matthew Craig (international call-up), Alfie Dorrington  (international call-up).

Previous meeting: N/A.

My score prediction: Spurs 2-1.

My one to watch: David Ajiboye. The former Spurs Academy player is a very skilful player who has great pace. The 23 year old winger did really well for Sutton United last season in League Two, and he is a player who also has a real eye for goal.

Spurs Under 18’s 3-0 Brighton & Hove Albion: (match report)

On Saturday Spurs’ Under 18 side faced Brighton & Hove Albion in an Under 18 Premier League South fixture, at Hotspur Way. Spurs won the game 3-0, and it was a good second half performance from Spurs, after quite an uneventful first half. Spurs lined-up with captain Luca Gunter in goal, as Maxwell McKnight, Archie Chaplin, Will Andiyapan and Jahziah Linton started in defence. George Abbott and Han Willhoft-King started in central midfield, with Mikey Moore and Riley Owen starting out wide on the flanks, either side of CAM Callum Olusesi. Oliver Irow led the line for Spurs, who got the game underway. George Abbott and Han Willhoft-King were both shown early yellow cards, before the first real chance of the game. That chance came Brighton’s way, as Remeiro Moulton hit a low effort wide of the Spurs goal, from the edge of their penalty area.

Mikey Moore had an effort blocked inside the Brighton box, in what turned out to be the final chance of the first half. Brighton got the second half underway. Spurs had made a change at half-time as Tyrese Hall came on to replace Han Willhoft-King in central midfield. Charlie Penman hit an effort over the Spurs goal from the edge of their penalty area, before Brandon Bryan-Waugh came on to replace Callum Olusesi. Remeiro Moulton volleyed an effort from the edge of the Spurs box, before Luca Gunter tipped behind Yussif Owusu’s headed effort on goal, from a Brighton corner-kick. Thomas Bloxham replaced Riley Owen on 74 minutes, and then shortly after Maeson King replaced Jahziah Linton. Spurs did take the lead shortly after however, after Tyrese Hall had latched onto a loose pass. The midfielder then went forward with the ball before passing it to Oliver Irow, on the edge of the Brighton box. Oliver Irow continued into the penalty area before powerfully finishing past Brighton goalkeeper Tommy Reid, into the centre of the goal, 1-0.

Archie Chaplin did well to block an effort from Remeiro Moulton inside the Spurs box, before Spurs doubled their lead. A cross from the right flank from the impressive Mikey Moore, managed to find Thomas Bloxham on the left side of the Brighton box. Bloxham’s resulting effort deflected off of a Brighton defender and went past the goalkeeper and into the goal, 2-0. Spurs made it 3-0 soon after, as Mikey Moore skilfully went past about four Brighton players, after going inside with the ball from the right flank, before entering the penalty area and finishing low past Tommy Reid, 3-0. James Roswell replaced Mikey Moore for the final minutes of the game, before the referee sounded his whistle for full-time. Spurs’ next competitive match at this level is away to Aston Villa in the Premier League South on Saturday the 1st of October.

Player reviews:

  • Luca Gunter: The Spurs captain and goalkeeper made one important save during the second half. He was once again vocal throughout the match.
  • Maxwell McKnight: Starting the match at right-back (he would also play further up the pitch at times in the game), Maxwell McKnight had a solid game defensively, and he got forward well on occasions as well.
  • Archie Chaplin: The central defender defended well alongside Will Andiyapan, and he made some good and important decisions during the match.
  • Will Andiyapan: Will Andiyapan did very well on the left side of central defence, alongside Archie Chaplin, and in the first half he made an important challenge inside the Spurs penalty area.
  • Jahziah Linton: The left-back did well on the left flank defensively, and he also liked to get forward up the pitch, when he could.
  • George Abbott: Tenacious and hardworking in central midfield, while also showing his quality on the ball on occasions, George Abbott got the assist for Mikey Moore’s late goal.
  • Han Willhoft-King: The first year scholar completed the first half of the match with Brighton, in central midfield alongside George Abbott.
  • Riley Owen: The winger started the game on the right flank. He linked up well with right-back Maxwell McKnight, and he also showed some good skill on the ball.
  • Callum Olusesi: Callum Olusesi played in the CAM role for Spurs against Brighton, on Saturday. Olusesi would link-up with centre-forward Oliver Irow, during the game.
  • Mikey Moore: My man of the match, see below.
  • Oliver Irow: The centre-forward for the match, Oliver Irow worked well of the ball, and his movement was good. He also took his goal really well during the second half.
  • Tyrese Hall: This was an impressive performance from second half substitute Tyrese Hall. Always looking to make that forward pass from his midfield role, the first year scholar was direct with the ball, and he showed some good skill, but he also worked very hard off the ball. Tyrese set-up Oliver Irow’s goal.
  • Brandon Bryan-Waugh: The second half substitute made a really good impression on the game from the right-back position. Bryan-Waugh got forward really well, to support the forward players.
  • Thomas Bloxham: The Republic of Ireland youth international took his goal well after being introduced to the game in the 74th minute. Thomas Bloxham looked lively during his time on the pitch.
  • Maeson King: The defender came on in the 77th minute of the game to replace Jahziah Linton.
  • James Roswell: The late substitute went into midfield late on in the match.

My man of the match – Mikey Moore. The schoolboy footballer and England youth international got a goal and an assist against Brighton, and during the second half the skilful and creative winger made a really good impression on the game. Mikey Moore went on a really good and skilful run for his goal, in the second half.

Spurs Under 21’s 1-3 Blackburn Rovers: (match report)

Spurs’ Under 21 side welcomed Blackburn Rovers to Hotspur Way on Saturday afternoon, for a Premier League 2 fixture. Wayne Burnett’s Spurs side lost the game 3-1, but the score didn’t really reflect how the game went, in my opinion. Spurs lined-up with Aaron Maguire in goal, while Kallum Cesay, Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Marqes Muir and Tyrell Ashcroft started in defence. Matthew Craig and Harvey White started in central midfield, with Yago Santiago and Romaine Mundle starting out on the flanks, either of CAM and Spurs captain Nile John. Jamie Donley led the line for Spurs, who got the match underway. However, the game didn’t start well for Spurs, with Blackburn Rovers taking the lead in the second minute of the match. After receiving Sam Szmodics pass down the left side of the Spurs box, Jared Harlock continued forward before finishing well past Aaron Maguire, 0-1.

Jared Harlock had an effort saved by Maguire inside the Spurs penalty area, before Tyrell Ashcroft had picked up an injury, and had to be replaced, as Max Robson was substituted on. Romaine Mundle had an effort blocked by Jay Haddow, inside the Blackburn Rovers penalty area, with Jamie Donley then having a deflected low effort from the edge of the away side’s penalty area, saved by Jordan Eastham. Sam Szmodics curled an effort wide of the Spurs goal, before Spurs went forward with the ball down the opposite end of the pitch. Romaine Mundle went inside with the ball from the left flank, before hitting an effort on goal, which was well saved by Eastham. A couple of minutes later and after receiving a pass from Max Robson, Romaine Mundle hit a powerful effort wide of the goal, after going inside with the ball from the left flank.

Patrick Gamble’s powerful effort from distance was tipped over his goal by Aaron Maguire, and then shortly afterwards, and after winning the ball off of Nile John,  Joe Rankin Costello went into the Spurs box, before hitting a low effort wide of the goal. Late on in the half Harvey White had an effort from the edge of the Blackburn Rovers box saved. The 20 year old midfielder then had an effort blocked soon after that initial chance. The referee sounded his whistle for half-time a couple of minutes later. The away side got the second half underway. An early chance came Spurs’ way, as Matthew Craig’s powerful deflected effort inside the away side’s penalty area was saved well by Jordan Eastham, with the ball then going to Jamie Donley, whose effort from close range was also saved.

Former Spurs player Dilan Markanday headed Sam Szmodics’ cross wide, before Spurs went forward down the other side of the pitch. A cross from Kallum Cesay on the right flank, ended up going to Romaine Mundle on the left side of the penalty area, and after some good skill on the ball he curled an effort wide of Eastham’s goal. Marqes Muir did well to block an effort from Joe Rankin Costello, with Spurs once again going forward with the ball. After receiving Harvey White’s pass on the right side of the Blackburn Rovers box, Yago Santiago skilfully went past Georgie Gent, before hitting an effort just over the goal. Malachi Fagan-Walcott was shown a yellow card a couple of minutes later. Marqes Muir blocked Louie Annesley’s effort well inside the Spurs box, before Harvey White blocked an effort from Sam Szmodics. The same player hit an effort against Aaron Maguire’s near post from a tight angle inside the Spurs box, a couple of minutes later.

After receiving Max Robson’s pass, Nile John went forward with the ball before having a powerful effort saved well by Eastham. A pass from Spurs’ goalkeeper Aaron Maguire was latched onto by Adam Wharton, who then passed the ball to the feet of Harry Leonard inside the Spurs box, and the 19 year old forward managed to find the bottom right corner of the goal, 0-2. Marqes Muir again impressed, this time blocking an effort from Sam Szmodics inside the Spurs box, just before Adam Wharton hit an effort just wide of the goal. The game was still quite an even one, but the next goal would prove to be very important. The goal went Blackburn Rovers’ way, after Sam Szmodics received Adam Wharton’s through-ball pass, and  Sam Szmodics’ effort was saved well by Maguire, but the Spurs goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Harry Leonard’s effort on the follow up, into the roof of the goal, 0-3.

A corner-kick which was delivered well into the box by Harvey White, was met by Marqes Muir, whose effort on goal from close range was saved well by Jordan Eastham. Brooklyn Lyons-Foster came on to replace Nile John, to make his first competitive appearance of the season. After receiving Matthew Craig’s pass on the left side of the Blackburn Rovers box, Jamie Donley hit an effort on goal which was saved by Jordan Eastham, with the ball then bouncing off of Donley and behind for a goal-kick. A good pass from Harvey White to Kallum Cesay on the right side of the away side’s box resulted in the defender hitting an effort wide of the goal. First year scholar Yusuf Akhamrich came on to make his debut for the Spurs Under 21 side, after replacing Jamie Donley. Brooklyn Lyons-Foster had an effort blocked, and then in the 90th minute of the game Spurs managed to get a goal. After Romaine Mundle passed the ball to Matthew Craig on the left flank, the Scotland youth international managed to find Harvey White in the centre of the Blackburn Rovers box with a lofted pass, and the midfielder finished really well into the goal with an effort on the half volley, 1-3. The referee sounded his whistle for full-time shortly after.

Spurs’ Under 21 side face Peterborough United in a Papa Johns Trophy fixture on Tuesday, in their next game.

My Spurs player of the match – Harvey White. Showing his experience in central midfield, Harvey White’s class on the ball and excellent decision making was as impressive as always. Making some good and clever forward passes during the game, the 20 year old also scored a well taken late goal for Spurs. Also, Matthew Craig had a very good game at left-back, where he played at after Tyrell Ashcroft had to be substituted early on in the game. Max Robson linked the play well in the CAM role, and Romaine Mundle went on some good and skilful runs with the ball.

Spurs Under 21’s versus Blackburn Rovers: (match preview)

Spurs’ Under 21 side will face Blackburn Rovers at Hotspur Way on Saturday afternoon (the game starts at 13:00pm), in their latest Premier League 2 fixture. Both games ended in draws last season between both sides, and games against the two sides in recent seasons have been very competitive. Always a difficult team to face, Blackburn Rovers are still looking for their first win of the 2022/23 season however, and they sit in 14th place in the Premier League 2 Division One table, having lost all five of their league games this season. I will be at the match tomorrow, and I would like to wish Spurs all the very best of luck.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Keeley, Cesay, Fagan-Walcott, Dorrington, Ashcroft, Craig, White, Santiago, John (c), Mundle, Donley.

Subs from: Maguire, Muir, Mathurin, Robson.

Injured/unavailable: N/A.

Doubtful: N/A.

Previous meeting: N/A.

My score prediction: Spurs 2-1.

My one to watch: Harry Leonard (19). The Blackburn Rovers forward was in great form for their Under 18 side last season, scoring a lot of goals. And Harry Leonard scored his first goal of the season for the Blackburn Rovers Under 21 side in midweek.

Spurs Under 18’s versus Brighton & Hove Albion: (match preview)

Spurs’ Under 18 side face Brighton & Hove Albion at Hotspur Way on Saturday morning (the game starts at 11:30am), in their latest Premier League South fixture. Stuart Lewis’ Spurs side won their last competitive match 3-1 away to a very good Liverpool side in the Under 18 Premier League Cup, and that was a very impressive result. Spurs won their home fixture with Brighton at this level last season, before recording a draw with Brighton in the reverse fixture. Brighton are a difficult team to play against, and Spurs will be hoping to return to winning ways after losing their last two Premier League South matches. This should be a great game, and it will be the first of three Spurs matches on Saturday, that I’ll be in attendance for. I will watch the majority of the Brighton game, before then watching the start of the Spurs Under 21’s Premier League 2 fixture against Blackburn Rovers (also at Hotspur Way), and then the first team game against Leicester City. However, I would like to wish the Spurs Under 18 side all the very best of luck for their fixture with Brighton on Saturday.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Gunter (c), Abbott, Chaplin, Andiyapan, Linton, Willhoft-King, Hall, McKnight, Bloxham, Akhamrich, Williams.

Subs from: Krasniqi, Roswell, Olusesi, Moore, Irow.

Injured/unavailable: N/A.

Doubtful: N/A.

Previous meeting: 3-3.

My score prediction: Spurs 2-1.

My one to watch: Joshua Duffus. The second year scholar and forward impressed in both Premier League South fixtures with Spurs last season. Joshua Duffus has already scored one goal and provided two assists for Brighton’s Under 18 side, so far this season.

Spurs Under 19’s versus Sporting Club de Portugal: (match preview)

After impressively winning 3-0 against French side Olympique de Marseille last Wednesday in their opening UEFA Youth League group-stage fixture, Spurs’ Under 19 side face Portuguese side Sporting Club de Portugal, on Tuesday. The game which starts at 11:00am and which takes place at the Stadium Aurelio Pereira, is both sides’ second group game of the competition, with Sporting Club de Portugal drawing 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt, in their first group game. Sporting Club de Portugal have a very good Academy set-up, and this will be a very difficult game for Spurs. However, the win and performance from Spurs against Olympique de Marseille last week was impressive, and a similar performance from Spurs tomorrow would hopefully see Spurs get a good result. I would like to wish Spurs all the very best of luck for the match.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Gunter, Abbott, Dorrington, Andiyapan, Ashcroft, Craig (c), John, Mundle, Donley, Mathurin, Williams.

Subs from: Maguire, Linton, Chaplin, Hall, McKnight, Bloxham, Ajayi.

Injured/unavailable: N/A.

Doubtful: N/A.

Previous meeting: N/A.

My score prediction: Spurs 2-1.

My one to watch: Rodrigo Ribeiro. The Sporting Club de Portugal forward scored their only goal of the game, in their opening group match of the 2022/23 UEFA Youth League, and Rodrigo Ribeiro has already played for the Sporting Club de Portugal first team.

Spurs Under 19’s 3-0 Olympique de Marseille: (match report)

In their first group-stage game of the 2022/23 UEFA Youth League, Spurs’ Under 19 side faced French side Olympique de Marseille at Hotspur Way, on Tuesday afternoon. Wayne Burnett’s Spurs side won the game 3-0, and it was an impressive performance from Spurs in what was their first UEFA Youth League game since the 2019/20 season. Spurs lined-up with Luca Gunter in goal, while George Abbott, Alfie Dorrington, Will Andiyapan and Tyrell Ashcroft started in defence. Captain Matthew Craig and Nile John started in central midfield, as Romaine Mundle and Roshaun Mathurin started out on the flanks, either side of CAM Jamie Donley. Jaden Williams led the line for Spurs. Marseille got the game underway. Roshaun Mathurin hit an early effort over from the edge of the Marseille penalty area, before Luca Gunter made a very important save at the other end of the pitch, to stop Emran Soglo’s effort from close range, inside the Spurs box.

Nile John had a deflected effort on the Marseille goal saved by goalkeeper Jelle Van Neck. Then, after trying to meet Luca Gunter’s long kick forward, Romaine Mundle managed to get onto the ball on the left side of the Marseille penalty area, but his resulting effort went wide across the goal. Raimane Daou had an effort from the edge of the Spurs box saved by Luca Gunter, a couple of minutes later. After Lucas Boulmot’s sliding challenge on Will Andiyapan inside the Marseille box resulted in the defender getting nothing on the ball, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped Jamie Donley, who calmly found the bottom right corner of the goal, 1-0. Emran Soglo hit an effort wide from the edge of the Spurs box, and then shortly after Lucas Boulmot volleyed wide Jores Rahou’s corner-kick. Jamie Donley received a yellow card, and then a volleyed effort from Jores Rahou from distance went wide of Luca Gunter’s goal.

On 32 minutes Spurs doubled their lead. After George Abbott had won the ball on the right flank, the second year scholar passed the ball to Romaine Mundle, who went forward with the ball down the right flank, before showing some good skill on the ball and delivering a low cross in front of the centre of the Marseille goal, which Jaden Williams tapped into the empty goal from close range, 2-0. Rayan Hassad hit an effort wide of the Spurs goal from distance, and then some good skill from Jores Rahou, resulted in him going into the Spurs box, but his effort went into the side-netting of Luca Gunter’s goal. Mathew Craig hit an effort over from the edge of the Marseille penalty area, and then a couple of minutes later, Yakine Mmadi Said hit an effort wide of the Spurs goal, from the edge of their penalty area, in what was the final chance of the first half. Spurs got the second half underway. After Jaden Williams had won the ball off of Rayan Hassad, he tried to score a goal from distance, with a lofted effort. However, Jelle Van Neck was able to make the save. After Nile John hit a powerful effort which seemed to deflect onto the crossbar of the Marseille goal, the alert Jaden Williams ran into the centre of the Marseille box to get on the ball and finish with a first time effort, 3-0.

Luca Gunter managed to save an effort from distance, just before Spurs made their first change of the game, as Maxwell McKnight came on to replace Roshaun Mathurin. Romaine Mundle hit a free-kick effort wide of the Marseille goal, from a difficult angle on the right flank, before Emran Soglo hit an effort over the Spurs goal, at the other end of the pitch. Damola Ajayi and Mikey Moore then came on to replace Jaden Williams and Romaine Mundle, respectively. After receiving the ball on the right flank, Nile John went past Elasrar Mohamed on the edge of the Marseille penalty area. John then passed the ball to Maxwell McKnight, whose first time effort was saved by Jelle Van Neck. Spurs made more changes as Jahziah Linton came on to replace Tyrell Ashcroft, and Thomas Bloxham came on to replace Jamie Donley. George Abbott did well to block behind Esey Gebreyesus’s effort inside the Spurs box. Luca Gunter saved a late Marseille effort from distance, before a surging forward from Nile John resulted in the 19 year old sending a lofted effort over the Marseille goal. The referee sounded his whistle for full-time shortly afterwards. Spurs’ next game in this competition is on next Tuesday, when they face Portuguese side Sporting Club de Portugal.

Player reviews:

  • Luca Gunter: The Spurs goalkeeper made a really important and impressive early save to stop Marseille from scoring, and overall he had a solid game on his UEFA Youth League debut. Luca Gunter was very vocal throughout the match.
  • George Abbott: My man of the match, see below.
  • Alfie Dorrington: Like George Abbott, central defender Alfie Dorrington was good in defence, alert, and commanding throughout the match. He impressed alongside Will Andiyapan.
  • Will Andiyapan: The versatile defender and Wales youth international also impressed on his UEFA Youth League debut. Will Andiyapan read the game well, and he also got forward to win the penalty that was awarded for Spurs during the first half.
  • Tyrell Ashcroft: Reading the game well and also defending well as he helped Spurs to keep a clean-sheet, Tyrell Ashcroft had a good all-round game in the left-back position.
  • Matthew Craig: The Spurs captain had an assured game in central midfield, and he also used the ball well, and got forward well on occasions.
  • Nile John: The central midfielder created some good chances during the game, and he was always looking to go forward with the ball.
  • Romaine Mundle: The winger started the game out on the right flank and he went on some good forward runs. Romaine Mundle got the assist for Jaden Williams’ first goal of the game, after some good work from the second year professional.
  • Jamie Donley: The Spurs CAM took the penalty kick well during the first half to score a goal. The second year scholar worked well off the ball and he linked up well with Jaden Williams.
  • Roshaun Mathurin: The winger started the game on the left flank, and during his time on the pitch he was always trying to go forward with the ball, whenever he got on the ball.
  • Jaden Williams: The centre-forward made some really good runs off the ball during the game against Marseille, and he worked so hard off the ball. A good all-round performance resulted in him scoring two goals, during his time on the pitch.
  • Maxwell McKnight: The second half substitute did well when he came on, and he almost scored a goal, from a chance that was created by Nile John.
  • Damola Ajayi: The forward came on in the second half, and he made a good impression on the game, moving well both with and without the ball, on occasions.
  • Mikey Moore: The second half substitute made a Luka Modrić-esque forward pass with the outside of his foot, to create a chance during his time on the pitch.
  • Jahziah Linton: The left-back came on late on in the game.
  • Thomas Bloxham: The creative forward was a late substitute during the game against Marseille.

My man of the match –  George Abbott. I was really impressed with how well George Abbott did, once again when playing at right-back. The second year scholar was defensively very good, and he defended his side of the pitch really well. The midfielder played a part in Spurs’ second goal of the game.

Spurs Under 19’s versus Olympique de Marseille: (match preview)

On Wednesday afternoon (the game starts at 14:00pm), a Spurs Under 19 side will face French side Olympique de Marseille, at Hotspur Way in the 2022/23 edition of the UEFA Youth League. Spurs return to the UEFA Youth League for the first time since the 2019/20 season, following the Spurs senior side qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, last season. The UEFA Youth League is a brilliant competition, and one that is great for Spurs’ Under 19 side to be involved in again. Spurs have been drawn in a difficult group (it is the same as the group that the first team have been drawn in), with Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting Clube de Portugal the other sides in the group. Wayne Burnett’s Spurs side will want to start the competition well, and it will be a very interesting game of football against Marseille, who have a great Academy set-up. The Spurs squad for the competition will mainly consist of players from the Spurs Under 18 side, but there will also likely be some players from the Spurs Under 23 side involved for Spurs in this competition. This should be a great match and I would like to wish Spurs all the very best of luck for their opening game of the 2022/23 UEFA Youth League.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Gunter, Abbott, Dorrington, Sayers, Linton, Hall, John (c), Mundle, Donley, Bloxham, Williams.

Subs from: Hayton, Andiyapan, Chaplin, McKnight, Willhoft-King, Owen, Akhamrich.

Injured/unavailable: N/A.

Doubtful: N/A.

Previous meeting: N/A.

My score prediction: Spurs 2-1.

My one to watch: Aylan Benyahia Tani (17). The talented Marseille forward has already featured on the bench for the Marseille senior side, last season.

Spurs Under 21’s 0-3 Crystal Palace: (match report)

On Saturday afternoon Spurs’ Under 21 side faced Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, in their latest Premier League 2 fixture. Wayne Burnett’s Spurs side lost the game 3-0, to a Crystal Palace who have started the season really well. Spurs lined-up with Aaron Maguire in goal, while Kallum Cesay, Marqes Muir, Alfie Dorrington and Tyrell Ashcroft started in defence. Matthew Craig and Harvey White started in central midfield, as Yago Santiago and Romaine Mundle started out on the flanks, either side of CAM and Spurs captain Nile John. Jamie Donley led the line for Spurs. Crystal Palace got the match underway. After receiving Killian Phillips’ pass inside the Spurs penalty area, John-Kymani Gordon had an effort blocked by Kallum Cesay. After Spurs had give the ball away, Crystal Palace made the most of the opportunity. David Omilabu passed the ball to John-Kymani Gordon on the right side of the Spurs box. Gordon went past Marqes Muir, before finishing low, into the far corner of Aaron Maguire’s goal, 0-1.

After receiving a pass from Harvey White on the edge of the Crystal Palace box, Nile John hit a curling effort towards the goal (it looked like it had taken a deflection off of a Crystal Palace defender) which hit Crystal Palace goalkeeper Owen Goodman’s left post. Spurs created another decent chance soon after. This time Yago Santiago passed the ball to Kallum Cesay on the edge of the Crystal Palace box, and his deflected effort hit Owen Goodman’s right post. Matthew Craig received a yellow card, before then managing to deflect behind a good effort from Jack Wells-Morrison on the edge of the Spurs box. Crystal Palace doubled their lead on 31 minutes. David Omilabu’s lofted pass from the right found John-Kymani Gordon inside the Spurs box, and his low volleyed effort deflected off of Alfie Dorrington, and past Aaron Maguire in the Spurs goal, 0-2.

After Harvey White had managed to win the ball on the right side of the Crystal Palace box, he went forward with the ball, before Owen Goodman managed to save his effort from a difficult angle. Crystal Palace made it 3-0 soon after. After the impressive David Ozoh passed the ball to Victor Akinwale on the right side of the Spurs box, the England youth international hit an effort on goal, which Aaron Maguire saved, but couldn’t gather. The ball came to John-Kymani Gordon who finished well to get his hat-trick, despite the best efforts of Aaron Maguire and Alfie Dorrington, 0-3. After Yago Santiago received Nile John’s pass, the former Celta Vigo player gave the ball to Jamie Donley on the right side of the Crystal Palace box, but the centre-forward hit the ball across the face of the goal. Nile John then had an effort from distance saved by Owen Goodman, in what was the final chance of the first half.

Spurs got the second half underway. Nile John hit a low effort wide, from the edge of the Crystal Palace penalty area, early on in the second half. Killian Phillips then hit an effort over Aaron Maguire’s goal, from inside the Spurs box, before Nile John had an effort saved from the edge of the Crystal Palace box. Spurs were trying to get back into the game. Romaine Mundle had a curling effort from the edge of the Crystal Palace box, saved by Owen Goodman. And then at the other end of the pitch, Noah Watson hit an effort over the Spurs goal from distance. After Romaine Mundle had a chance inside the Crystal Palace penalty area, the ball came to Yago Santiago. However, the Spurs forward had his effort saved by Owen Goodman. Malachi Fagan-Walcott came on to replace Marqes Muir in central defence, and then shortly after Roshaun Mathurin came on to replace Alfie Dorrington, with Matthew Craig moving to central defence. David Ozoh hit an effort over from the edge of the Spurs box, before Kallum Cesay hit a low effort wide from the edge of the Crystal Palace box, at the other end of the pitch.

John-Kymani Gordon hit a late effort over Aaron Maguire’s goal, from the edge of the Spurs box, just before the referee sounded his whistle for full-time. Spurs’ Under 21 side face West Ham United next Saturday afternoon, in their next Premier League 2 fixture.

My Spurs player of the match – Malachi Fagan-Walcott. The 20 year old central defender made his return to the Spurs Under 21 side as a substitute in the 68th minute of the Crystal Palace game, and he read the game well, showed his experience and was assured in defence.
