Why Ross Barkley would be a perfect addition to Spurs:

Why Ross Barkley would be a perfect addition to Spurs:

Rumours linking Everton midfielder Ross Barkley to our club (Spurs) have been going around for some time now, and with the toffees signing of Wayne Rooney over the weekend, those rumours linking Barkley with Spurs will surely be reignited. Whilst Spurs generally remain as the bookies favourites to be Barkley’s next club, Spurs are still yet to make a move for the 23 year old whose contract expires at the end of next season. The following is not an article on whether or not I think Barkley will come to Spurs, instead it’s on how I think he’d become a perfect addition to Pochettino’s squad. Barkley who joined Everton as an 11 year old, is an attacking midfielder who has been capped by England on 22 occasions. The youngster who has been a big part of Everton’s first team for many seasons, has put in some eye catching performances which quickly won him wide spread admiration from those with in the footballing community. A powerful and pacy attacking midfielder with silky skills, the Englishman has netted 21 goals in 150 appearances for his boyhood club, picking up many an assist in the process. Whilst in his younger years, considered as one of England’s hottest footballing prodigies, it’s fair to say that the Everton man hasn’t quite reached his full potential, whilst at times inconsistent, spectators are constantly reminded by his class, especially when it comes to his excellent dribbling ability.

A versatile midfielder Barkley would bring a whole new dimension to Spurs’ attack, suitable as an attacking midfielder, winger on both flanks, and as a central midfielder. Barkley is a different type of player to Alli or Eriksen for example, he’s more rounded then the two in regards to his style of play, I’d even go as far as drawing comparisons to star Spurs man Mousa Dembele. His technically a similar albeit further forward player than the Belgian, both very strong on the ball, Barkley also dribbles with the ball in a similar way to Dembele. A hugely gifted player yet to have his potential fully unlocked, there’s no better manager for him to flourish under than Pochettino, our manager has developed young English players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier into footballing superstars on the international stage. Whilst he would come to Spurs as an older player, the Everton man strikes me as a very Pochettino like player.

IMG_2976

We haven’t currently got an attacking player like Barkley, who can just surge forward with a ball, Alli and Eriksen don’t posses that pace about their game. He has drawn comparisons with footballing greats such as Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, praised by Barcelona legend Xavi for his physical and technical ability. But the 23 year old Liverpudlian is still to prove himself consistently on the biggest stage. And question marks would fall on whether he is ready for a move to Pochettino’s champions league side.

Our squad is not huge nor is our depth, whilst Eriksen, Alli, Son and Lamela would all start ahead of Barkley were he to make the move to north London, the midfielders versatility makes him such a useful player to have. He could cover for Dembele in the midfield, as well as coming on as an impact sub on the wings, but he’s best position would be behind Kane where his creativity would blossom, and I’m sure his goal tally would greatly improve playing around such talented players. I don’t think we need to sign loads of players this summer but my opinion is this, Barkley would probably be a very pricey gamble, but Pochettino’s gambles on unknown players like Dier and Alli leave me more than confident that Pochettino can develop an already proven talent into a world class player. Spurs announce first team friendly with Italian giants Juventus:

“This match will form an important part of our preparations, particularly with the Premier League season starting just a week later. We met Juventus in Australia during pre-season last year and it was a highly competitive game, very useful for us, and we expect a similar game this year at Wembley.” (Mauricio Pochettino)

Spurs have this afternoon announced a mouth watering pre season friendly against Serie A holders and Champions league finalists Juventus, at Wembley stadium on Saturday the 5th of August. There were rumours with in the Italian media that Spurs would be facing Juventus at Wembley, and the confirmation by the club will come as welcome news to us Spurs fans. The game will be our final pre season friendly before we take on Newcastle United just a week later in our first league game of the season. Spurs fans will welcome such a game against one of the worlds finest sides, with household names such as Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Paulo Dybala and Miralem Pjanić, La Vecchia Signora (The old lady) will provide us with the perfect opportunity to prepare for life at the national stadium. We last met Massimiliano Allegri’s side last pre season in Melbourne, in a game that finished 2-1 to the Italian side, hopefully this time round we can get a positive result against them. Hopefully Spurs fans will also get to see some new signings for the very first time. COYS

it’s the end of the league fixtures but now we go to Stemwede in Germany for a tournament. That’s a major part of the season where we play against some outstanding foreign opposition. You know my thoughts on the importance of a tournament format to try to prepare the boys for the Premier League so it’s far from the end of the season. The preparation for Stemwede will be as, if not more intense and we’ll go there looking to top the season off by winning the cup there.” (John McDermott)

Spurs announced via their website the squad that will travel to Germany for the under 19 Volksbank cup which begins tomorrow. John McDermott’s side will face German side Werder Bremen at 4:30pm tomorrow before playing another game three hours later against Danish side FC Copenhagen. Then on the Friday Spurs will face both Red Bull Brazil and Mühlenkreis as they look to progress to the finals. The squad is an interesting mixture of first year and second year scholars as well as a couple of development squad players. Players that travelled with the senior side to Hong Kong that won’t be involved in the youth tournament include striker Kazaiah Sterling. Whilst it’s interesting to see players like Marcus Edwards, Shayon Harrison and Samuel Shashoua travel, it’s clear that Spurs want their finest youth players to be involved in the prestigious youth tournament. I wish McDermott’s side the very best of luck for the tournament. COYS

Our 17-man travelling squad includes: Freeman (GK), Whiteman (GK), Bennetts, Brown, Edwards, Georgiou, Gonzalez-Velasco, Griffiths, Harrison, Lock, Loft, Marsh, Omolabi, Reynolds, Roles, Shashoua, Tsaroulla.

Ugo Ehiogu- A commemorative piece on a man who had such a profound impact on Spurs’ academy:

Ugo Ehiogu- A commemorative piece on a man who had such a profound impact on Spurs’ academy:

IMG_2657.JPG

Last Friday, the footballing community woke up to the shocking news of the sudden passing of former England international Ugo Ehiogu. Ehiogu was one of the finest English centre halves of his generation, a player who was admired by so many, the Hackney born defender who won four caps for his country, enjoyed famous spells with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough where he won two league cup trophies. Regarded as a legend by both Villa and Middlesbrough supporters for his terrific defensive qualities, Ehiogu went on to play for a host of other top clubs. Ugo was our much respected under 23’s head coach, a talented young coach, Ehiogu coached our development side on a permanent basis since 2014, having joined our academy coaching staff on a part time basis a couple of years earlier. Since taking the job of coaching our under 21’s as they were known then, Ehiogu instilled Pochettino’s footballing philosophy into his team, playing with a high pressing style of play. It was just three weeks ago that I had seen him on the touchline at Goodison park for Spurs under 23’s in their game against Everton. Just as I had seen him many times before over the past few seasons, Ehiogu’s coaching had a profound impact on the development of all those that he had coached, Tottenham academy graduates both past and present. Ugo Ehiogu was a winner, and his winning mentality was always evident on the touchline, even if we were 3-0 up and we had just squandered a chance, he’d always be looking for his team to extend their lead, his passion and enthusiasm for the game was infectious.

Often animated from the dugout, Ehiogu was a great communicator to his players, it was clear to see he was a great motivator to them. What I admired most about Ehiogu as a coach was his fighting spirit, and he had implemented that fighting spirit into every single one of his players, whether we were trailing 4-0 to Liverpools under 23’s in the opening half an hour of a game, Ehiogu’s players would fight like pros until the final whistle, playing for more than pride. The tributes came quickly pouring in on Friday morning after news of his death broke, what was particularly touching was the messages from his players both past and present, their appreciation for him on their immense development as players and as people. Pochettino added: “Ugo was a lovely man and we had a very good relationship from the first day we [my coaching team] arrived at the club. He was always a person who helped us a lot and we will miss him greatly. I send all my love to his family and friends at such a difficult time. It’s a huge loss both personally and for all the Tottenham Hotspur family.” From the many games I had watched Ugo coach in, personally I have no doubt that he would have gone on to become a great manager, he enriched our blossoming academy and helped to bring through the likes of Harry Winks and Josh Onomah to the first team, his passing is a huge loss to our club and football in general. My sincere condolences go to his family and friends at this terrible time. RIP Ugo.
His last tweet was the measure of the man:

Tomorrow lunchtime Spurs host Bournemouth at the Lane, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea to just four points. Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side come to north London having drawn their last three outings, including impressive draws with Manchester United and Liverpool. The cherries sit in 15th position, seven points adrift of the danger zone but with survival still not a mathematical certainty, Howe’s side will be eager to pick up a point against the Lillywhites when they face them on Saturday. However we’re in red hot form coming into this game and a victory would equal our record of 12 home league wins, that recording stretching all the way back to the 1920’s. Bournemouth are in some ways similar to us, they play fearless attacking football with a flair to their game, they press high and have a great work ethic and it is no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino, said that he enjoys to watch the cherries in action. Whilst former Manchester United man Josh King is in scintillating form with 10 goals from his last 11 matches, I feel as if the danger will come from Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park with his his defence splitting passing, whilst the searing pace of Ryan Fraser will have Kyle Walker busy down the right flank. We have no choice but to win as far as the title race is concerned, though our opposition will provide a much tougher test than Watford did last week. I’m predicting a tough game for Mauricio Pochettino’s men but one that I still can still only see ending in victory for the Lillywhites. I shall have a match report of tomorrow afternoons game published by late afternoon. COYS!
Team news: Harry Winks, Danny Rose and Erik Lamela are all ruled out, whilst Michel Vorm and Cameron Carter-Vickers are injury doubts ahead of Saturday lunchtimes game. With Harry Kane in contention for a first start in over a month and Victor Wanyama reportedly set to return in midfield, its hard to know what formation Pochettino will line up in. After all he surely couldn’t drop the inform Son to opt for a 3-4-2-1 formation?

My predicted lineup: (3-4-2-1) Lloris, Dier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Walker, Dier, Dembele, Davies, Eriksen, Alli, Kane.

A pre match read: My article on the inform Son Heung-Min. https://superhotspur.com/2017/04/09/here-comes-the-son-son-continues-to-improve-in-his-second-season-at-the-lillywhites/

My predicted score : Spurs 3-1 Bournemouth. Courtesy of goals from Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Son.

One to watch: The inform Norwegian forward Josh King, who has 13 league goals this season.

5 of the most memorable FA cup ties played at the Lane:

5 of the most memorable FA cup ties played at the Lane:

IMG_2541.JPG

Tomorrow will see Spurs involved in their last ever FA cup tie at the world famous, White Hart Lane. This grand old stadium has seen some dramatic FA cup ties over the years, below is just a selection of some of those memorable matches that the Lane has hosted.

1. Spurs 13-2 Crewe Alexandra: When Bill Nicholson’s side drew 2-2 to fourth tier Crewe Alexandra in the fourth round of the FA cup, no one could have anticipated what would happen when the two sides met again in the replay at the Lane. Nicholson’s talented side thrashed Crewe an astonishing 13-2, the Lillywhites were 10-1 up at the interval. Their astonishing victory was the highest scoring FA cup match of the 20th century and the Lillywhites biggest victory in their history. The following is an account from a Crewe fan that was at the match: “As we were a footballing team, Spurs were the best team in the country at that time and did the double a year later. On that night they made the great Real Madrid side look second rate. They were unstoppable and it’s fair to say that my work colleague enjoyed it far better than I did.”

2. Spurs 6-0 Birmingham: The year was 1967, the season that Spurs would be crowned winners of the FA cup. En route to their final against rivals Chelsea, Spurs met Birmingham city in a quarter final replay at the Lane. Bill Nicholson’s side put on a phenomenal showing, defeating the blues 6-0, with goals from Alan Gilzean, Jimmy Greaves x2, Frank Saul and a brace from Terry Venables seeing Spurs storm into the semi-finals.

3. Not all of our FA cup ties at the Lane were memorable for the right reasons, a perfect example of this was Spurs fourth round exit at the hands of Man City in a replay in the 2003-04 season. Spurs were in cruise control and lead 3-0 at the break, with victory for David Pleat’s side seeming inevitable. However, Man City done the unthinkable and scored four goals in the second half to beat the Lillywhites 4-3, stunning the White Hart Lane faithful and shattering spurs’ FA cup dreams for another season. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GiUIi9UJpyk

4. Spurs 5-0 Sunderland: Bill Nicholson’s famous double winning side of 1960-61 season went through to the semifinals of the FA cup in scintillating fashion with their 5-0 thumping of Sunderland in a quarter final replay. Over 64,000 fans witnessed a a vintage Spurs display as goals from Les Allen, Terry Dyson x2, Dave Mackay and Bobby Smith saw Spurs march through to the semifinals, in what will surely be remembered as one of Spurs’s most memorable FA cup matches. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=euMldfb4L7k

5. Spurs 4-3 Wycombe: It’s quite fitting that the final match in my list is from this seasons current campaign, Pochettino’s team came from behind twice to get a dramatic 4-3 victory over league two side Wycombe Wanderers at the Lane. It was a game that had every thing, it contained passion and excitement, it was a good old fashioned FA cup tie and one that will live long on in the memory of Spurs supporters. Son’s late winner in stoppage time of the second half sent the Lane into a scene of sheer ecstasy, in a game where Wycombe deserved at least a replay. Here’s hoping tomorrows final cup match at the Lane against Millwall, will be just as memorable! COYS

Spurs under 23’s 1-0 Sunderland: (match report)

Spurs under 23’s 1-0 Sunderland: (match report)

IMG_2466.JPG

Our under 23’s side recorded an important 1-0 victory over Sunderland this evening, as Ugo Ehiogu’s side move up to seventh in the PL2 table. Our victory at the Lamex stadium in Stevenage, was in my opinion the teams best performance of the season. It was a faultless team performance, everyone worked so hard and made vital contributions to the play. We controlled the game, dictating the tempo against a good Sunderland side, and despite fielding four under 18 players, Ehiogu’s players dominated the game and reaped their rewards. The game was only five minutes old when the Lillywhites took the lead, courtesy of young striker Kazaiah Sterling. After Christian Maghoma hit a long ball upfield, Sunderland’s goalkeeper Max Stryjkek controlled the ball with his feet but the high pressing of Sterling unsettled Stryjeck, and the striker managed to rob the ball off him and hit the ball home, 1-0 to Spurs. After having taken the lead Spurs established their authority on the game, making the visitors chase after the ball. However, Sunderland almost found a way back into the game on 24 minutes, when the ball fell to Swedish forward Joel Asoro and from eight yards out the striker forced a tremendous cat like diving save from Lopez, with the ball deflecting off of Tanganga in the process. Just under ten minutes later Spurs came close to doubling their advantage, following a foul on Tsaroulla on the edge of the penalty area, Joe Pritchard stepped up to curl a wonderful effort over the wall as if cannoned off the crossbar, much to the relief of the Sunderland goalkeeper.

img_2468

The second period started in Sunderlands favour, as the Tyne and Wear club almost drew level a couple of minutes in. Joel Asoro showing brilliant feet as he surged forward on to the edge of the penalty area, before firing an effort off the inside of the post, with the ball somehow going wide as it came back across the goal. Later Spurs went close at the other end, after Sterling was found at the far post from the resulting free kick, but the strikers effort from close range hit the side netting. Spurs battled well both defensively and in the midfield as they saw out the game, to record a much deserved victory. I thought every single player had an excellent game against the black cats and and Monday evenings performance will be a massive confidence boost to Ehiogu’s side.

Player review:
– Pau Lopez: Although he wasn’t tested a great deal, Lopez made a world class save in the first half. In addition the Spaniards handling was very impressive.
– Joe Muscatt: An excellent display from the right back, solid defensively Muscatt drove forward with some great weaving runs on many occasions, and demonstrated great skill.
– Nick Tsaroulla: His first ever appearance for the under 23’s, but the left back looked right at home putting in a great display at left back, making some fine challenges.
– Filip Lesniak: The skipper was an anchor in the midfield, very efficient and didn’t make a single mistake all night.
– Japhet Tanganga: The second year scholar was very comfortable against Sunderland, composed and tenacious. Him and Maghoma make a good centre back pairing.
– Christian Maghoma: A quality display from the tall centre back, Maghoma was commanding and dealt very well with the Sunderland attack, winning almost all of his headers.
– Shayon Harrison: The Yeovil loanee was played out wide tonight and he showed really good feet, looking very dangerous when going forward.
– Zenon Stylianides: Was such an important player in our win, Stylianides showed great awareness as he impressed with both the offensive and defensive aspects of his game. Glided past players and made some lovely forward passes.
– Shilow Tracey: Never stopped, constantly pressed the Sunderlands defence, and made some lovely powerful forward runs.
– Kazaiah Sterling: Sterling’s fantastic goalscoring form continued as he netted what proved to be the winner. Sterling was a constant threat, sharp and instinctive it looks as if this won’t be his last under 23 match of the the season.

– Joe Pritchard: A good performance from the attacking midfielder, worked incredibly hard and was so unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with his free kick.

My man of the match: Zenon Stylianides. The skilful midfielder was such an important player in our 1-0 win, Stylianides showed great awareness as he impressed with both the offensive and defensive aspects of his game. Glided past players and made some lovely forward passes, his skilful style of play and great vision outwitting the Sunderland midfield.

Spurs: Pau Lopez, Muscatt, Tsaroulla, Lesniak (c), Tanganga, Maghoma, Harrison, Stylianides (Skipp 90+1), Tracey, Pritchard (Owens 79), Sterling (Goddard 87).Substitutes (not used): Glover (GK).

Spurs 1-2 Liverpool: (match report)

Spurs 1-2 Liverpool: (match report)

IMG_1905.JPG

Spurs were knocked out of the EFL cup on Tuesday night by Liverpool at Anfield as the reds defeated our young side 2-1. It was an entertaining cup tie as Mauricio Pochettino’s second string squad battled hard against a tough Liverpool side. The home side started the game well as they went forward at every opportunity, Jurgen Klopp’s side took a somewhat fortuitous lead in the ninth minute, after Nkoudou slipped just outside the box Marko Grujic capitalised and hit a deflected effort at goal which fell into the path of Sturbridge who prodded the ball into the back of the net despite Vorm’s best efforts, it seemed as if Vorm also slipped whilst attempting to deny Sturridge. Liverpool continued to attack and shortly afterwards Sturridge almost doubled the reds lead, after being found free in the box the England international hit a weak effort which went straight into the hands of Michel Vorm. After struggling in the opening 20 minutes Spurs went close to equalising at the other end after Janssen narrowly headed over after meeting Trippier’s cross at the back post.

IMG_1903.JPG

Liverpool didn’t alter their style of play in the second half and just over ten minutes in Vorm was forced into making an excellent save as he denied Divorck Origi’s powerful effort with a strong hand. Shortly after the hour mark Liverpool doubled their lead with Daniel Sturridge’s second goal of the game, after being played through by Wijnaldum, Sturridge slotted a composed finish past Vorm and into the back of the net. Since Erik Lamela’s introduction Spurs’s attack was bolstered by the Argentines creativity and on 76 minutes Lamela won a penalty after being tripped by Lucas in the penalty area. Up stepped Janssen who converted his penalty with a fine finish to get his second goal for Spurs. Shortly after Liverpool almost put the game out of sight after Sturridge’s curling effort was deflected on to the cross bar. With two minutes remaining Erik Lamela found debutant Shayon Harrison with a wonderful pass however, Harrison couldn’t chest the ball down in time as Mignolet gathered the ball from his feet, the final score Spurs 1-2 Liverpool.

Michel Vorm was excellent in between the sticks, Vorm made a string of top class saves to deny the reds. I thought that goalscorer Vincent Janssen had a terrific game up front apart from despatching his penalty with nerves of steel, Janssen worked incredibly hard throughout the match working tirelessly to get in to goalscoring positions. In addition the Netherlands international showcased great courage and physicality causing the Liverpool defenders bother throughout the match. Erik Lamela made a big impact on the game since coming on in the second half, Lamela’s creativity and class shone throughout, winning Spurs’s penalty Lamela was incredibly effective behind Janssen and his brilliant pass late on almost saw Harrison get a dramatic late equaliser. As much as I understand and respect Pochettino’s decision to rest many players I still thought Pochettino fielded too weak a squad against Klopp’s side. I felt as if we had put just one more regular in the lineup then I believe that we would have progressed to the quarter finals. However, a win against Leicester on Saturday would erase Spurs fans disappointment suffered in midweek.

My man of the match: Michel Vorm, The Dutchman made a string of top class saves to deny the reds from winning with a greater goal margin.

Liverpool (4-3-3): Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold (Clyne 68), Lucas (c), Klavan, Moreno; Stewart, Grujic (Can 89), Ejaria, Wijnaldum; Origi (Ings 68), Sturridge. Substitutes (not used): Karius, Lovren, Lallana, Mane.
Spurs (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies; Dier (c) (Wanyama 67), Winks; Onomah, Carroll (Lamela 61), Nkoudou (Harrison 83); Janssen. Substitutes (not used): Lopez, Walkes, Vertonghen, Amos.
Yellow cards: Liverpool – Alexander-Arnold 26, Ings 82, Grujic 84; Spurs – Winks 90+1, Wimmer 90+2.

Venue: Vitality stadium
Date: Saturday 22nd October 12:30pm
Live: Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports Mix
Referee: Craig Pawson
Head2Heads: 3-0 Spurs, 5-1 Spurs.

Later today Spurs face Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look to return to winning ways after having drawn their last two matches. Spurs face a tough test on the south coast as Eddie Howe’s attacking side have a potent attack with the likes of Callum Wilson, Josh King and Jordan Ibe all on the cherries books. We defeated Bournemouth 5-1 in this fixture last season but today’s game will be a trickier contest, Howe’s team are now an established premier league side and the Lillywhites are missing two of their most important players through injury. However, I do believe that we will defeat the Cherries fairly comfortably as I reckon our attacking prowess will prove too much for Howe’s side. COYS

Team news: Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld both remain sidelined through injury whilst fullback Danny Rose is a doubt after picking up a foot injury in Leverkusen on Tuesday.

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Wimmer, Vertonghen, Davies, Dembele, Wanyama, Eriksen, Alli, Son, Janssen.

My predicted scoreline: 3-0 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Son x2 and Christian Eriksen.

One to watch: Bournemouths prolific striker Callum Wilson.
