Some thoughts on the Paulo Gazzaniga to Spurs rumours:

IMG_3140.JPG

It’s fair to say most Spurs fans were surprised when they heard the news, that we had been linked with Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The youngish Argentine goalkeeper (25) spent last season on loan with Spanish segunda division side Rayo Vallecano. Reports are suggesting that Pochettino is interested in signing the goalkeeper, presumably to make added competition between Lloris and Vorm for the first place spot. Gazzaniga who hails from the same town in Argentina as Pochettino (Murphy) could well become Spurs’ first addition of the summer. I must admit I was very surprised when I heard of this rumour yesterday morning, from the point of view that we already have two excellent first team goalkeepers and a whole host of talented academy goalkeepers who have such a bright future in the game. However, we’ve also got to bear in mind the fact that we probably won’t be signing Pau Lopez from Espanyol this summer. Lopez who spent last season on loan at Spurs, despite not featuring for the senior side, he gave Pochettino that security of knowing that he had a keeper in his side capable of stepping in were there to be an injury crisis. I was desperately hoping we’d sign Lopez whose contract runs out next summer, and I still think we will in the future. But the rumours of Pochettino wanting Gazzaniga make sense, he may not be the most experienced goalkeeper. But he’s played in the premier league before, whilst also playing for Gillingham and Rayo Vallecano in between. The Argentine who is an excellent kicker of the ball, is still a young and improving goalkeeper and if Pochettino wants us to sign him, then so do I.

Highly rated youth team goalkeepers Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin both 18, are expected to be given squad numbers for this season. Though the talented pair are for now still probably too young and inexperienced to fill in for Lloris and Vorm. Though Gazzaniga wouldn’t be and that’s why I’d like him at Spurs, he may not play many games if any over the coming season, a bit like Alex Manninger’s spell with Liverpool last season. Pochettino could well link up with his fellow countryman who he managed at Southampton, its certainly an interesting transfer rumour that will divide opinion, but I welcome the idea of the Argentine joining Spurs. Some thoughts on Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Man City:

IMG_3124.JPG

“We’ve had a tough week of training hard, but the quality has to be better and we all know that. That’s why you play in pre-season. We don’t think ‘it’s pre-season, we don’t care’ – we do care. We now have two weeks to improve ourselves, to get to the level we were at last season and become even better. You don’t want to lose, of course, but we will learn and improve.” (Toby Alderweireld)

Last night saw Spurs play the final game of their US tour to fellow English club Manchester City, it was not the way Pochettino’s side would have wanted to end their tour, with the lilywhites being thrashed 3-1 by Pep Guardiola’s team. In a game which was dominated by the sky blues from the start, Spurs struggled to establish their authority on the game despite the fact that Pochettino had fielded such a strong starting 11. We came up against a city side who looked as if they were entering the middle of their season, they were sharp, intense and pacy and that was what really caught us out last night. Man City should have won by a greater goal margin, with John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Brahim Diaz getting their goals. Despite Spurs almost taking the lead through Dele Alli on two minutes, it was one traffic for the remainder of the game. City taking the lead through centre half John Stones inside 10 minutes, before going on to squander a whole host of chances. They exposed the lack of pace in our side, with former Spurs man Kyle Walker causing a lot of problems for Davies down the right. Guardiola’s side were fast and fluid, they passed the ball around so well and so quickly that we seemed to struggle to stop the fast attacking play of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Man City’s other two goals were as the result of perfectly timed attacking runs which caught us out throughout the game. There were positives in the game, the performances of Vincent Janssen, Kyle Walker-Peters and Tashan Oakley-Boothe all good. Spurs were poor last night, but it really doesn’t worry me in the slightest, to their credit Man City were superb whilst we seemed tired/lethargic. I think the friendly against Juventus next Saturday will be a far more telling and important game as we look to adapt to playing at Wembley ahead of the new season. In youth related news, it was a memorable weekend for Wayne Burnett’s side who won the European under 21 tournament in France. Burnett’s side beat teams such a as PSG and FC Lorient en route to the final where they met Belgian side Standard Liege, with the game ending 2-2 courtesy of goals from Shayon Harrison and Shilow Tracey. Spurs won the game 5-4 on penalties with goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie making the winning save. It was a brilliant achievement from the talented squad, Spurs’ winger turned wingback Keanan Bennetts also won the player of the tournament for his performances. There was a poignant and touching tribute to Ugo Ehiogu by head coach Wayne Burnett after the game: “Justin Cochrane (Under-23 Assistant Coach) and I have been with them for the last month or so, but they’ve had a really excellent development programme before we got here, so a special mention should go to those two because they’ve been a big part of these players’ development, for sure. Everyone was mindful of that, we had a minute’s silence in memory of Ugo before the game and I think it’s fitting – the players will have been thinking of him, so it’s a nice moment to lift the trophy.”

Finally I noticed that former Spurs academy goalkeeper Tom McDermott (19) has found a new club following his departure in the summer. The goalkeeper who we signed from Warrenpoint in 2014, has joined League of Ireland club Derry City. McDermott is the second Spurs player to join Derry in recent seasons along with Aaron Mceneff who joined in 2015. COYS

Spurs play their final game of their USA tour later tonight as Pochettino’s side go head to head with familiar opposition, Premier league side Manchester City. The game which takes place in Nashville Tennessee (kick off-11pm) will bring to an end a tour for Spurs, which has seen them record a 4-2 victory over PSG and a 3-2 loss to Roma. It’s our last game which will excite Spurs fans more than previous two, with this evenings game seeing Spurs go up against Pep Guardiola’s Man City side who have been very active in this summers transfer window, with the addition of former Spurs man Kyle Walker one of many new players to make the move to Manchester. Tonight’s match will provide Pochettino’s team with a great pre season test against a side who they’ll be coming up against in the league campaign over the next season. After the undeserved defeat to Roma in the last game, Pochettino will likely rotate his side for tonight’s match, and there’s a couple of players who I’m really hoping to see on the team sheet. Academy player Anthony Georgiou made a really positive debut against Roma in midweek, the energy and persistence he showed down the left wing should hopefully warrant him with a start against Man City. Midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe who has already featured as a substitute in both previous Spurs games has also impressed, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start. Whilst this game will provide a real challenge for Pochettino’s young side, I’m sure his players will be relishing the opportunity to go up against one of the most talented sides in Europe. COYS

My predicted lineup: (3-4-2-1) Whiteman, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Wimmer, Trippier, Dembele, Oakley-Boothe, Davies, Eriksen, Alli, Kane.

My score prediction: 2-2 courtesy of goals from Kane and Alli.

One to watch: Kyle Walker was a Spurs player less than a month ago, the talented right back needs no introducing ahead of us facing him just a few weeks after his £50 million pound transfer to the sky blues.

An ode to Harry Kane:

An ode to Harry Kane:

“His attitude, work-rate…he deserves everything he’s got and that’s one of the biggest compliments I can pay. He was focused and knew what he wanted and went about getting there with hard work.” (Clive Allen)

IMG_3099.JPG

On the day that Harry Kane turns 24, I thought it appropriate that I write an ode to the Spurs great himself. Whilst he’s breakthrough season with Spurs was only just a couple of seasons ago, Kane has made such a great impression on the premier league, that he is already considered to be one of England’s most talented young strikers in a generation. It’s almost impossible to imagine Spurs without their talisman Kane leading the line. The remarkable rise of the Londoner who has risen through the youth levels at Spurs’ academy, has developed into one of the most complete and prolific strikers in the game. Under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino he has gone on to claim the premier league golden boot for the past two seasons, even managing to score a sensational 29 league goals last term, even more remarkable is the feat if you take into consideration the fact that he missed three months of the season through injury. Kane who started out at bitter rivals Arsenal, joined our youth academy back in 2004, Kane’s journey through Spurs’ academy has seen the versatile striker play a wide range of roles, including playing as a winger and even as a holding midfielder. A prolific scorer at under 18 level, Kane seized his chance under Pochettino back in 2014 at a time when Spurs were struggling to find the back of the net.

IMG_3063

Pochettino has built one of the greatest Spurs teams in recent memory around the England international, he’s ability to score all types of goals, Kane’s excellent work rate and willingness to get back and defend is what makes him one of the greatest strikers in the game. Kane’s far more similar to former Spurs great Bobby Smith, then he is to any other modern striker, such is Kane’s old fashioned style of play that I’m convinced he would have flourished in that great Spurs team of 1960-61. He may be no sporting maverick with a panache about his game, but he is determined and hungry to score goals which he does so very well, and that’s what makes him so great a player. The strikers remarkable goal scoring record for the lilywhites, and his astonishing statistics have gone on to win him wide spread admiration and respect off so many in the game. At every Spurs game you’ll hear the Spurs fans bellow, “Harry Kane he’s one of our own”. It’s no wonder why us Spurs fans sing that with such pride, it’s because he plays for the fans, with Tottenham Hotspur running through his veins. He may only be turning 24, but Kane is in the eyes of so many, already a Spurs legend for what he has achieved. He has mastered the role of a centre forward, managing to score every type of goal from excellent headers and powerful long shots, to poaching goals inside the six yard box. Harry Kane is the pride of Tottenham, and the best bit of his story so far, is that it is yet to come. COYS

Some thoughts on Spurs’ 3-2 defeat to Roma:

Some thoughts on Spurs’ 3-2 defeat to Roma:

IMG_3072.JPG

We were involved in another thrilling game in the USA overnight, this time involving Italian side Roma. The fiercely contested friendly which took place in Harrison New Jersey, somehow ended 3-2 to the Serie A side despite the fact that spurs were in all honesty the better side. Pochettino’s side saw a couple of youth players involved, including Anthony Georgiou who shone down the left wing. We fell behind inside 13 minutes due to a penalty which should never have been awarded to I Lupi, after Radja Nainggolan’s cross struck the arm of Carter-Vickers who attempted to block the Belgian’s pass. After some pondering and some words with the fourth official, the referee harshly awarded a penalty to the astonishment of the spurs players. Diego Perotti cooly despatched his effort from the spot to put Roma one up, we lacked that creative spark for the remainder of the half, unable to draw level.

The second half saw a revitalised Spurs side take hold of the game, the creativity of Winks from the midfield, and the pace of Georgiou and Nkoudou on the flanks saw us create a flurry of chances. However, Spurs fell two behind on 70 minutes, when Turkish youngster Cengiz Ünder (who had been linked with Spurs this summer) put the Italian side 2-0 up. Roma’s second came as a result of a whipped cross by Strootman which was was cleared by Wimmer only in to the path of Ünder, who drilled home from inside the box. A fine solo effort from Georgiou tested Skorupski soon afterwards, then we finally got a way back into the game, when Janssen’s effort rebounded off the post, Winks eventually managing to bundel the ball home.

Pochettino’s side had gotten a breakthrough, and with Roma under pressure we managed to score a second past them in stoppage time, Nkoudou’s wonderful whipped cross was met by Janssen inside the area, as he volleyed home. The frantic nature of the game however had different plans for our side, just seconds later Roma went on a dangerous counter attack, which saw Ünder send a cross into the penalty area which young striker Tumminello put past Lloris to end a game which promised so much for Spurs.

It was a highly interesting game from the perspective of a Spurs fan, there was a lot that caught my eye. I thought we played well though the result may have suggested otherwise, I thought our performance at the very least should have warranted a draw, whilst it wasn’t vintage Spurs (which was to be expected) it wasn’t a poor performance by any means. We lacked the creativity of the PSG game, mainly down to the fact that Eriksen only played in the second half of the game. We dominated possession, had over double the amount of attempts on goal. Two vital decisions had a big impact on the game, the debatable penalty awarded to Roma, and the foul committed by Fazio on Kane in the box which wasn’t given as a penalty. The two performances that both impressed me the most last night were those of Spurs youngsters Anthony Georgiou and Harry Winks. The latter who is already an established member of our first team, showed no rustiness to his game despite it being only his second game since a long injury lay off. Winks was creative from the midfield, his deftly accurate passing creating many openings. The Englishman’s composure and decision making were also highly impressive, as to was his breaking up of play, I think Winks is going to play another massive part in Pochettino’s team this season.

20 year old winger Anthony Georgiou who made his debut last night, made a serious impression on the game, winning plaudits from many Spurs fans in the process. I have always been impressed with Georgiou’s excellent work ethic which was no different against the Serie A club. He’s always given 110% in all the youth games I’ve watched him in, and it was that hardworking attribute of his game which impressed so many last night. Playing on the left wing, Georgiou’s pace and high pressing caused the opposition a host of problems. But it was his hunger to get involved and tenacity down the left which made him make such an impression on the game, he wasn’t overwhelmed by the occasion, he rose to the challenge seizing his chance. He constantly took on Bruno Peres, constantly looking to create space. I’ve rated Georgiou for a long time now, and it was absolutely brilliant to see him make such a great impression on his first team debut, I’m hoping he’ll start against Man City on Saturday. We face fellow premier league club Manchester City on Saturday in our final game of the tour. COYS

Spurs play the second game of their US tour on Wednesday morning, in a game involving last years Serie A runners up AS Roma, the game takes place at the Red Bull Arena In New Jersey. Mauricio Pochettino’s side started their pre season in style with a 4-2 victory over PSG in Orlando on Sunday. Now Pochettino’s side will go head to head with some of Serie A’s finest players, Radja Nainggolan, Eden Dzeko and Kostas Manolas are just some of the top players that I Lupi (the wolves) have at their disposal. The wide rotation throughout our last game will likely take place again, and I’m hoping that it will see a couple more of the youngsters make their senior debuts, and whilst it may only be a friendly I am confident that Spurs will put in a good showing against the Italian side. 17 year old midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe put in a fine performance against PSG and could well feature again, I’m also hoping to see other academy players feature in what will be such an important game in their development. I’m also hoping to see Harry Winks get a good run out in the midfield. The game which takes place in the early hours of Wednesday morning (1am) will be shown live on premier sports. I will be providing a match report on tonight’s game, which will be yet another intriguing pre season encounter. COYS

Our first official game of the 2017/18 season will take place in the early hours of Sunday morning, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side prepare to face French club PSG in Orlando as part of their three game tour of the USA. A squad which includes a rich mixture of youth and experience, Spurs will go up against one of Europes finest sides in what will prove to be a fascinating first test of the season, after a long summer break. The game which takes place as part of the international champions cup, sees Spurs play their first of three games against some of Europes finest sides. Our game involving the Ligue 1 runners up in Orlando, takes place in the early hours of Sunday morning (kick off:1AM) with the game being shown live on premier sports. With seven young academy players called up to the squad, the team he picks in Orlando will be a very interesting one. As always substitutions will be happening throughout the game, which will give some of our youngsters their chance to make an impact. With players as good as Javier Pastore and Thiago Silva in their side, it would be a massive confidence boost were we to win over Unai Emery’s side. Of course it’s important for us to start off the pre season campaign with a positive result, but what I’m most looking forward to seeing is how our youngsters get on and where they’ll be played, will we see Georgiou or Brown play at left back and will see young Brandon Austin or Alfie Whiteman get a chance in between the sticks? Another player who I’m looking forward to seeing again is Nkoudou, who I reckon will have a big season ahead with Spurs. Either way, Spurs are officially back and I’m eager to see how we get on against potential champions league opposition. COYS

One to watch: PSG’s pacy Brazilian winger who scored 12 league goals last season, Lucas Moura will provide a tough challenge for whoever plays at left back.

Some background information on the youngsters called up to Spurs’ USA tour:

IMG_3030.JPG

Amongst the senior players called up to Pochettino’s squad for Spurs’ upcoming pre season tour of the USA, there are seven youngsters from our academy that have also been included. The following piece will provide some background information on these players and their styles of play. I haven’t included 20 year old full back Kyle Walker-Peters on the list as he’s already been training with Pochettino’s first team squad for some time.

Brandon Austin: The 18 year old goalkeeper was a mainstay in our under 18’s side last season enjoying an excellent campaign, the talented shot stopper has already made two appearances for our under 23’s. Austin will be traveling to the country which he has represented at youth level, Austin played for the USA’s under 18 team last April, he is eligible through his father who was a professional basketball player.

Jaden Brown: The Lewisham born left back played a big part in both of our under 18 and under 23 campaigns last season. Brown who operates at left back, has represented England up to under 18 level, Brown is a player who I rate highly he’s a defensive but pacy fullback who is akin to Ben Davies in some ways, he can also fill in at centre half if needed. Brown joins Ben Davies as our only other natural left back on the tour.

Jon Dinzeyi: Towering centre half Jon Dinzeyi was a regular in our under 18 squad last season up until suffering an injury which ruled him out for the last few months of the campaign. The second year scholar whose excellent in the air has represented England at under 17 level over the course of last season. The islington born centre half who is still only 17, is clearly a player that Spurs rate highly hence his inclusion in the squad.

Anthony Georgiou: A player who I’m very happy to see included in the squad, Georgiou had an injury hit 2016/17 season for our under 23’s. The 20 year old left winger who can also play at fullback, is a player who I’ve always rated highly. A rapid winger with a fine cross at his disposal, the Cypriot youth international fully deserves his chance to shine in the first team and I suspect that Pochettino will use him as a wingback due to our shortage of left backs.

Tashan Oakley-Boothe: 17 year old midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe was a star of England’s under 17 euro campaign over the summer, the highly rated midfielder is another of our talented midfield prospects. Dembelesque in his style of play, the strong midfielder possesses great skill and vision, he is a very attack minded midfielder.

IMG_3014.JPG

Will Miller: A familiar name with in our academy set, up the 21 year old forward spent last season on loan with championship club Burton Albion. The highly skilful and agile Miller was a part of Pochettino’s last pre season squad that travelled to Australia, putting in a fine showing at the unfamiliar setting of left back. The former child actor is a player who I strongly believe can became a Spurs senior player in the near future, watch out for his impressive movement on the ball.

Alfie Whiteman: Last but not least is talented young goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman, the England under 18 international is in my opinion of England’s most promising young goalkeepers. Whiteman who is from Tottenham, has been a part of Pochettino’s traveling senior squad on a couple of occasions last season. Whilst making the bench for our league cup tie with Gillingham at the Lane. COYS

Remembering that 95 yard goal from Paul Robinson: (memory lane)

Remembering that 95 yard goal from Paul Robinson: (memory lane)

IMG_3019

Former Spurs goalkeeper and England international Paul Robinson today announced his retirement from the game of football. The Yorkshireman who played for Spurs between 2004 and 2008 became a popular and important figure at the lilywhites, Robinson who was signed from Leeds United for a fee of £1.5 million pounds back in May of 2004, Robinson went on to make 175 appearances for Spurs which included a 2008 league cup winners medal for Robinson. As well as a top shot stopper Robinson was also a brilliant kicker of the ball, and on St.Patrick’s day in 2007 Robinson created an unforgettable memory for Spurs fans, when in a premier league game against Watford, he remarkably scored the second goal of his professional career. I was sat in the north stand on that sunny Saturday afternoon at White Hart Lane, Martin Jol’s side were in full control of the game as Jermaine Jenas had put us ahead on the stroke of half time. On the 63rd minute of the game a seemingly routine free kick from 95 yards out was kicked by Robinson, even now I remember it in slow motion as it travelled all the way into Ben Foster’s box before bouncing over the England internationals head and into the back of the net, to the astonishment of the crowd. I remember thinking to myself did Robinson really score that! As Ricardo Rocha and Michael Dawson rushed to congratulate him, we ended up winning the game 3-1 over the hornets. But that game will forever be etched in to the memories of Spurs fans for the incredible long range goal scored by Paul Robinson. I wish Paul a very happy retirement and thank him for his time at Spurs.
