Spurs marked their first home game of the season with a deserved 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace as Victor Wanyama scored an 83rd minute winner to give the Lillywhites their first win of the season. Mauricio Pochettino’s side didn’t take long to stamp their authority on the game and they nearly took the lead on 13 minutes, after an unmarked Toby Alderweireld had a good chance to score from the resulting corner. However, the Belgian didn’t connect too well with the ball as his header flew into the arms of Wayne Hennessey. Shortly before the half hour mark Hennessey again denied our lads from taking the lead after the Wales international scrambled Harry Kane’s effort from outside the box before spreading himself well to deny Janssen with an excellent save from the rebound. Kane came desperately close to breaking the deadlock, as deep in additional time of the first half Kane was found just outside the box before firing an effort narrowly wide of Hennessy’s left post.

Ten minutes in to the second Harry Kane again went agonisingly close to putting us ahead after receiving an excellent cross from Eric Dier, Kane who was under pressure from Pape Souaré headed his effort inches wide of the post. We constantly applied pressure to the south London club in the minutes that followed and were presented with a glorious opportunity on 69 minutes, after new singing Vincent Janssen who had impressed throughout, was gifted with a one on one opportunity after being found by Alli from the following cross. Janssen one on one with Hennessey got his angles wrong before side footing a wayward effort wide of the goal. Following his introduction to the game in the second half Alli brought a much needed spark to our game as well as bringing much needed energy to our attack. Almost half the stadium thought the youngster had scored on 79 minutes after Alli hit a first time shot on the edge of the box just over the cross bar, as many Spurs fans wondered if it just wasn’t going to be our day. However, four minutes later we finally took the lead through new signing Victor Wanyama. Erik Lamela’s corner was met by Harry Kane who’s header reached Victor Wanyama who nodded home from just in front of the keeper to send the Spurs fans roaring with delight, the final score Spurs 1-0 Crystal Palace.

It was a fantastic victory today and it was a game in which we dominated from start to finish, Pochettino will be proud of the lads performance and the determination in which they demonstrated. However, it was evident that we are still getting back to full match sharpness as a team though that should be something that comes to fruition in the coming games. Toby Alderweireld was exceptional in the centre of defence today and was in my opinion our best player, goalscorer Victor Wanyama also had an excellent performance in midfield as well as scoring the all important goal. In addition Kyle Walker had an excellent match at right back, It was a great team performance and one in which the team can build on. The lads have a weeks rest until next Saturday’s fixture against Liverpool and I am confident we will be able to record another victory at White Hart Lane next Saturday lunchtime if we can perform as well as we done today.

This Saturday we face Crystal Palace in our first home game of the season as Mauricio Pochettino’s lads look to get their first win of the new campaign after last Saturday’s opening day draw to Everton at Goodison park. Pochettino’s side are no strangers to the Eagles, having played the south London club three times last season defeating them on two of those occasions. We are undoubtedly favourites ahead of this Saturday’s game and in many ways we couldn’t play Palace at a better time, with Alan Pardew’s squad lacking in depth and continuing their poor league form from last season into the current season. However, Pardew’s side are a well structured team and are a tough side to break down, Palace will presumably sit deep and look for a point this Saturday, with Palace looking to benefit from set pieces, with Connor Wickham a threat with in the box. Palace are expected to sign Christian Benteke from Liverpool, but the Belgian is unlikely to be in contention to play at White Hart Lane on Saturday. An early goal could be the difference in this match, but I am confident that we will defeat the Eagles in relatively comfortable fashion, as I believe Pardew’s side will not be able to deal with our potent attack. A win would also do our confidence the world of good and would hopefully kick start a successful league campaign for the Lillywhites. COYS⚽️

Team news: Hugo Lloris is ruled out through injury whilst Mousa Dembele is suspended. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min returns after playing for South Korea at the Olympics though Son will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s game.

My team prediction: (4-2-3-1) Vorm, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Wanyama, Dier, Lamela, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.

My score prediction: 3-0 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

One to watch: Our former player Andros Townsend, who will no doubt cause problems down the wing.

Young Spurs forward Elliot Thorpe called up to Wales under 17 squad:

image.jpeg

The Welsh FA today published their under 17’s squad who will face Hungary in two separate friendly international matches at Newport Stadium on Tuesday, 23 August (KO 3.00pm) and Thursday, 25 August (KO 11.00am). Included in the squad is young Spurs under 16’s player Elliot Thorpe who can play as an attacking midfielder as well as a striker,  Thorpe is a 15 year old player who plays for our under 16’s side. Thorpe was also part of the Wales under 16 side that won the 2015-16 Victory shield,  I wish Elliot the very best of luck for these two matches.

Hugo Lloris ruled out of action for four weeks:

image.jpeg

It has just been announced by the club that our captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been ruled out of action for four weeks, after the France international picked up a hamstring injury at Everton on the opening day, which forced our captain off in the first half. Michel Vorm will replace Lloris with the Dutchman set to be in goal against Crystal palace this Saturday whilst young keeper Luke McGee is expected to be on the bench. I wish Hugo a speedy recovery.

Our under 23’s played their first game of the inaugural premier league 2 season yesterday as they lost 2-0 to Everton at the Lamex stadium, in a game in which Ugo Ehiogu’s side were unlucky not to have got something out of after being the better side for the majority of the game. It was the toffees who had the first real chance of the game as on seven minutes their midfielder Ryan Ledson headed an effort on goal from the resulting corner which seemed destined to nestle in the back of the net. However, Joe Pritchard made an excellent clearance on the line to keep the score level. Less than ten minutes later Ehiogu’s side nearly took the lead at the other end, after Marcus Edwards went on a surging run before playing through Shayon Harrison with a wonderfully weighted pass, Harrison’s effort was saved well by Hewelt who got down low to thwart the strikers effort. Spurs were presented with the best chance of the half on 35 minutes after defender Anton Walkes was tripped in the box by Morgan Feeney following the ball being put in to the box from the resulting corner, the referee pointed to the spot, with Harrison the penalty taker. However, Harrison’s low left footed shot from the penalty spot was saved well by Hewlet as the sides went in level at the break.

We struggled to replicate our potency up front in the second half with the first clear cut chance of the second half coming on the hour mark after Morgan Feeney almost gave Everton the lead. Feeney tried to poke the ball home after being found by Brendan Galloway from the resulting free kick but Tom Glover was in Feeney’s way as the young Australian got hold of the ball at the second attempt. The blues broke the deadlock in the 79th minute after David Henen latched onto a cross field pass by Anton Walkes, the Belgian sprinted down the left wing before surging past Amos and firing the ball high into the net from inside the box to give the toffees the lead. Things got worse for Spurs as six minutes later Everton doubled their lead to put the game out of sight for the Lillywhites, after Matthew Foulds tapped home from close range after Glover produced a fine save from Courtney Duffus before the ball fell to Foulds on the line, the final score Spurs under 23’s 0-2 Everton.

The scoreline doesn’t represent the game as for a lot of it we were in control, looking comfortable in possession and creating some fine chances. However most of these chances came in the first 45 minutes, Connor Ogilvie had a very good game as the youngster read the game extremely well from left back and centre back after Maghoma’s injury, I hope the talented Ogilvie gets a chance at Spurs this season. Another player that I thought played very well was Will Miller, Miller who played against Juventus in pre season, made some excellent runs in midfield as he’s skill carved through the Everton defence on occasions, Miller was impressive throughout the game and was one of our best players. Highly rated wonder kid Marcus Edwards went on many exciting and promising runs in the first half as he caused Everton a host of problems. Captain Luke Amos also had a really good performance in the centre of the park, Amos made fine passes, was creative and made some good interceptions in midfield. Finally last seasons under 21 star, Kyle Walker-Peters had a very good game at right back and was yet again highly impressive throughout.

Interestingly sat behind me at the match was Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough who was scouting possible players to sign on loan, in addition MK Dons manager Karl Robinson was also in attendance as well as scouts from Cambridge United, and some other clubs. Next up Ehiogu’s side face Reading who they play next Tuesday.

We kicked off our much anticipated league campaign yesterday at Goodison park as we played out a one all draw against Everton. However, the match couldn’t have started any worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s lads, as Everton took the lead with just five minutes on the clock following a long range free kick from Everton’s Ross Barkley. The England internationals whipped delivery deceived everyone in the box including Lloris as it nestled inside the right post to give the toffees a somewhat fortuitous lead. Ten minutes after Everton took the lead Ronald Koeman’s men almost got a second but Lloris pulled of a top class save to deny Phil Jagielka following a free kick which was sent in to the box, the tall defender sent a powerful header towards the goal in which our captain acrobatically tipped over. Shortly after the half hour mark Lloris was forced off due to a hamstring problem with Michel Vorm replacing the France international. Everton continued to attack and in stoppage time of the first half forward Gerard Deulofeu was one on one with Michel Vorm, the spaniard struck a powerful effort which was saved well from the alert Vorm.

We started the second half with much more confidence and our free flowing attacking football in which we forced on Everton’s defence, paid off just before the hour mark after Erik Lamela headed Spurs level. The goal came about after Kyle Walker delivered a wonderful and pacy cross in to the box as Lamela ran between Holgate and Jagielka before expertly guiding the ball into the back of the net. In the minutes that followed we began to stamp our authority on the game as we created a whole host of chances with our best coming on 81 minutes after a close range effort from Vincent Janssen was superbly saved by Maarten Stekelenburg as the former World Cup finalist made an incredible reflex save to deny Janssen from opening his account with Spurs. We again went close shortly afterwards through Christian Eriksen whose free kick on the edge of the box flew narrowly over the crossbar. Our man of the match, Erik Lamela almost won us the game late on after the Argentine unleashed a powerful shot from inside the box, Lamela’s deflected shot was saved brilliantly by Stekelenburg as the Dutchman pushed the ball over the bar, the final score Spurs 1-1 Everton.

I believe a draw was probably the fairest result in what was very much a game of two halves and although we drew what was most important for us as a team was not losing our opining game. I imagine Pochettino will be happy with how we played yesterday and the promise in which we showed throughout the second half. Erik Lamela was our man of the match, whilst Kyle Walker put in a very good performance at right back as well as setting up Lamela for his goal. Janssen’s introduction made a positive impact on the game and the Dutchman was desperately unlucky not to give us the lead. It may not have been our most complete or assured performance but that was to be expected with it being our first competitive game since last seasons shocker against Newcastle on the final day. I am confident and encouraged that next weeks match against Crystal Palace will end in victory and that our season will grow into something greater than the last. COYS⚽️

Our under 16’s started their league campaign at home to Southampton yesterday as they defeated the saints 5-3 in a thrilling encounter at Hotspur way. Forward Rodel Richards scored a hat trick whilst first year scholar Tariq Hinds also scored, as too did midfielder Paris Maghoma. A bright start to the season from this talented pool of players.

Our under 18’s started the season in style today after they defeated Southampton 4-1 at Hotspur way. The young Lillywhites took the lead on 14 minutes after captain George Marsh sent a high ball over the top in which forward Reo Griffiths latched onto before being brought down inside the box, a penalty was awarded. Samuel Shashoua converted from the spot to give the Lillywhites the lead, Jack Roles doubled our lead 25 minutes in after receiving the ball from Griffiths before firing a low range shot which went through the hands of the Southampton goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Just over ten minutes into to second half Griffiths made it 3-0 to Spurs, after being played in by Bennetts the striker made no mistake in front of goal as he slotted home. Southampton grabbed one back after Smallbone fired home from 25 yards out. However, we got our fourth and final goal of the game through Tashan Oakley-Boothe after the midfielder fired high into the net from a tight angle following exchanging passes with Griffiths, the final score Spurs 4-1 Southampton. A highly impressive start to the season for the under 18’s next up for them is a trip to little Heath to play West Ham United next Saturday.

Tomorrow we kick off our season against Everton at Goodison park with players and fans alike so very eager for the season to begin after such a long break from competitive football for the Lillywhites. When the fixtures were announced in June I must admit I wasn’t chuffed that we’d got Everton away as our opener, taking into consideration the fact that we’d only beaten Everton at Goodison park only twice in our last ten visits. However, with a new manager in place (Ronald Koeman) and a somewhat stretched squad, I really fancy our chances tomorrow. I strongly believe that we are stronger, more mature and hungrier than ever to win each game, tomorrow will no doubt be tough and you never know what side will turn up on the opening day but with our depth and talent I am extremely hopeful for tomorrow’s encounter at Goodison park. Interestingly Ronald Koeman said this week: that Everton are “only 70% fit” which will come as great as great news to Pochettino.

New signing Ashley Williams won’t be ready to face us in time, whilst the toffees star man Romelu Lukaku is a doubt as too is their right back Seamus Coleman. Meanwhile, Mousa Dembele is our only absentee as the Belgian is suspended with new signing Victor Wanyama expected to replace him. I think both sides will be desperate not to lose, but with our stamina and potent attack I think we will run out one nil winners, and start the season in style. COYS⚽️

My predicted line up: (4-2-3-1) Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Wanyama, Dier, Lamela, Alli, Eriksen and Kane.

My score prediction: 1-0 to Spurs courtesy of a goal from Victor Wanyama.

One too watch: Everton’s pacy and skill full winger who has an eye for goal, Kevin Mirallas.

Spurs announce premier league squad numbers for 2016/17 season:

image.jpeg

Within the last hour Spurs have announced their premier league squad numbers for the coming season, our new signings Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen have been given the numbers 12 and 9. Meanwhile, a handful of our youngsters have also been given squad numbers for the current season, with Marcus Edwards, Will Miller, Luke Amos, Anton Walkes, Alfie Whiteman, Tom Glover, Shayon Harrison, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kyle Walker-Peters all being given squad numbers. Hopefully these talented youngsters will get senior game time over the coming season. Dele Alli will now have just DELE on the back of his shirt for personal reasons, whilst interestingly Nabil Bentaleb has been given the number 42 this will probably fuel rumours of the midfielders departure from Spurs however, I hope the talented Algerian international stays with us. We are now less than one day away until we kick off our season at Goodison park and I have a feeling and a great hope that this season will be even greater than the last. COYS⚽️
