A quick piece on the heroic performance of Toby Alderweireld during Wednesday’s victory:
There are few things more satisfying for a Spurs fan than seeing your team show resilience, class and composure to see off one of Europes finest sides. Pochettino’s side done exactly that on Wednesday night as Spurs put the ‘Wembley curse’ to the pages of history, to defeat German club Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at the national stadium, in a result which will prove so, so important to our season in many different ways. On the back of a deeply pleasing victory over Everton at the weekend, Pochettino’s side came up against a multi talented Dortmund side who played some breathtaking attacking football during the game, but it was the tactical masterclass of Spurs boss Pochettino that swayed the game into our favour. With the visitors unable to maintain their high pressing game, Spurs played their finest football at the national stadium to date, to see off the Bundesliga club in style, with an assured 3-1 victory. Rather than writing a piece on the game itself, I thought I’d write a quick piece on a particular players performance during the game. The performance of Toby Alderweireld may not has been as noticeable as that of the superb Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen, but for me the Belgian centre half was magical during Wednesday nights game. Alderweireld marshalled our defence, with his impeccable timing and play. No one could deny his passion and commitment throughout the game. Time after time he made crucial tackles that helped relieve the pressure for Spurs.
Whilst all players played as a team I could not help focusing on Toby as he instilled the confidence and self belief throughout the whole game. Alderweirld showed the skill and determination that will be needed for us to be truly successful at Wembley this season. Come on Real Madrid.
