Some thoughts on Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough:

IMG_2400.JPG

It was a match that may not live long in the memory of Spurs fans but the Lillywhites recorded a comfortable 1-0 victory over the Teesiders to stay in second place, three points ahead of rivals Arsenal. Mauricio Pochettino’s side dug deep to defeat a tough and defensive Middlesbrough team with Harry Kane’s penalty enough for Spurs, in what was a thoroughly satisfying performance. Pochettino again proved how flexible he is with his tactics, with Ben Davies’s covering at left wing back in place of the injured Danny Rose. Davies’s defensive stance allowed Son to flourish down the left, and the South Korean international won the decisive penalty which won the match. I was never worried about Middlesbrough scoring they showed little potency up front, failing to register single shot on target. However, it was clear that we’d have our work cut out if we were to break down Middlesbrough’s stubborn defence. What I found particularly impressive about our win today was the composure in which the players showed and the killer instinct they showed to win the game. We were defensively very good though we never seemed in danger, it may not have been the most alluring of matches, but Pochettino and his team won’t care in the slightest. We are now the only team that looks capable to challenge the runaway leaders Chelsea, we’ve been on a terrific run and I’m hoping it can continue when we make the trip up to Anfield to face Liverpool next Saturday. My player by player review:

– Hugo Lloris: A quite day for Hugo he didn’t have to make a single save.
– Kyle Walker: Yet another impressive performance from Walker, an industrious display.
– Toby Alderweireld: I thought Alderweireld had a great game today, he made some important interceptions. A very comfortable display from the centre half
– Eric Dier: Good in the air and defensively very tidy.
– Ben Davies: Covered Rose well at left wingback, his deeper style of play allowed Son to flourish done the left.
– Victor Wanyama: A terrific performance in the midfield tireless and persistence, Wanyama was a rock with in the centre of the park.
– Mousa Dembele: Such a strong and powerful performance from the Belgian, he glided past the Middlesbrough players like a skater on ice.
– Christian Eriksen: Covered 13 km, Eriksen was a bright spark and very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.
– Dele Alli: Started off well and passed the ball around well, faded as the game went on.
– Son: A superb performance from my man of the match, he sparkled down the left flank.
– Harry Kane: Not heavily involved but Kane took his penalty very well, his 63rd goal in the premier league!

My man of the match: Son Heung-Min. Son was the driving force behind today’s victory, his energy and pace was the main source of our creativity. Son also won the penalty which Kane despatched perfectly.

Spurs under 18’s 2-0 Norwich:(match report)

Spurs under 18’s 2-0 Norwich: (match report)

IMG_2394.JPG
Our under 18’s put in yet another impressive display when they defeated Norwich 2-0 in the FA Youth cup 5th round on Thursday night, to book their place in the quarter finals. The opening minutes of the match saw the visitors on top, with the canaries playing fast attacking football. Norwich winger Glen Middleton saw his effort fly narrowly over the crossbar early on. However, after a tough opening the Lillywhites quality began to shine and on 17 minutes a nice piece of play resulted in us taking the lead. Samuel Shashoua used his skill to cut inside his man, passing the ball to George Marsh who surging forward put a perfectly measured through ball in to the path of Kazaiah Sterling. Sterling’s composure in front of goal saw the striker fire the ball low into the bottom corner of the net, 1-0 to Spurs! We began to flourish after taking the lead playing some breathtaking attacking football, akin to that of Pochettino’s senior team. And on the half hour mark Spurs doubled their advantage, after midfielder Dylan Duncan showed good feet to pick out Sterling who burst past the Norwich defenders, before jabbing the ball into the back of the net, 2-0 to the Spurs! Sterling almost got his hat-trick minutes later when Shashoua put in a delightful through ball, but Sterling took a moment too long as Norwich defender Toby Syme managed to block the strikers effort.

IMG_2396.JPG

We went into the second half on a high, and our impressive play continued just three minutes into the second half Japhet Tanganga came close to netting Spurs’ third, when Shashoua whipped a cross in to the box which was met by the tall centre half, his effort going narrowly over the crossbar. Winger Keanan Bennett’s effort was blocked minutes later when the off balance Bennett’s saw his effort superbly blocked on the line by a Norwich defender. A terrific late save by goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman ensured that Spurs kept a deserved clean sheet. After last nights terrific performance, Spurs have now progressed into the quarter finals of this prestigious competition, they will now face Newcastle United who they will play at the 52,000 seater stadium, St James’ Park on a date yet to be confirmed. Instead of doing my usual round up focusing on a couple of our key performers, I will instead go through each player individually on the list below. As last nights performance was an excellent team performance.

IMG_2395.JPG

– Alfie Whiteman: He may not have had an awful lot to do, but when called into action Whiteman was assured. His diving save late on in the second half was superb.
– TJ Eyoma: The athletic right back had a very good game, powerful down the flanks his anticipation was top draw, I’m a big fan of Eyoma!
– Nick Tsaroulla: The left back was exceptional against Norwich, Tsaroulla was excellent going forward, his incredibly fast over 10 metres. He’s really beginning to remind me of Danny Rose, Tsaroulla was also very good defensively, making two brilliant challenges late on.
– Jonathan Dinzeyi: The tall centre back had a good match, composed and good on the ball, Dinzeyi is very hard to shrug off the ball.
– Japhet Tanganga: Yet another excellent performance from the highly rated centre half. He was powerful, assured and decisive and was superb in the air.
– Samuel Shashoua: The most creative player on the field, Shashoua’s dribbling wowed the crowd. He is a special player and the Norwich players we’re constantly marking him. His quick thinking was really impressive.
– George Marsh: An outstanding performance from captain George Marsh. Tenacious as ever Marsh never stopped, the midfielder broke up play very well.
– Dylan Duncan: The box to box midfielder had a good game, setting up the second goal Duncan made some clever runs from midfield.
– Kazaiah Sterling: My man of the match, Kazaiah Sterling was on fire last night. The powerful centre forward caused the Norwich defence a headache through out, another hot prospect!
– Tashan Oakley-Boothe: Playing as the number 10 against Norwich Oakley-Boothe was impressive, he showed good creativity last night. There’s a lot more to come from the England youth international.
– Keanan Bennett’s: The winger was very sharp on the left wing and was a potent threat through out, whipping in some delightful crosses.

My man of the match: Clinical striker Kazaiah Sterling who grabbed a brace in Thursday nights 2-0 victory.

Spurs under 23’s 3-1 Southampton: (match report)

Spurs under 23’s 3-1 Southampton: (match report)

IMG_2384.JPG

Our under 23’s recorded a much needed 3-1 victory over Southampton on Tuesday night. Ugo Ehiogu’s side put in a vibrant first half display which saw Spurs put three goals past Southampton, their confident first half performance effectively ending the game. Spurs started the game the better side, passing the ball around the field with ease. The first real chance came early on when Joe Pritchard whipped a fine cross into the box in which the unmarked Ryan Loft waywardly volleyed off target, Loft knew he should have done better. Spurs’ domination of the game paid off just before the half hour mark, when Nathan Oduwa opened the scoring for Spurs. Oduwa who was playing with an air of confidence as the passed the ball to Miller from the edge of the area and Miller played the ball back into the path of Oduwa who fired home in style, his composed side footed effort flying in to the top corner. Oduwa was again the inspiration for our second goal which came just two minutes afterwards. Oduwa darted forward on the left wing before whipping in a low cross, which was bundled into the back of the net by Southampton defender Joes, 2-0 to Spurs. Southampton had barely got any of the ball in the remainder of the first half, as Spurs played with a panache about their game. And deep in to stoppage time of the first half Spurs got their third of the game. Oduwa again the provider playing a short pass to Tracey who showed good ball control inside the area, managing to rifle a shot in to the far corner of the net.

IMG_2385.JPG

The second half was nowhere near as exciting as the first, the game petered out with neither side creating much to shout about. However, after a rash sliding challenge from Joe Pritchard in the 59th minute the referee awarded the saints a penalty. Ryan Seager’s effort was initially denied by a fine Glover save, only for the ball to roll into the path of Seager who made no mistake as he hit the ball home. There was little of note in the remaining half an hour, as Spurs comfortably completed an important 3-1 victory over the saints, to go three points clear of safety in eighth position, a result which will delight Ugo Ehiogu. It was a really impressive performance last night in what was a bitterly cold evening in Stevenage, I was surprised to see loanees Luke Amos, Will Miller and Ryan Loft involved even though they are eligible under EFL ruling. I thought our more experienced side put in a really good performance and it was refreshing to see us get three points on the board.

IMG_2383.JPGI thought Nathan Oduwa was superb yet again (see below) I also thought that Will Miller had a good game, I am a big fan of Miller. The 20 year old is an incredibly skilful player and he made great movement as well as assisting Oduwa’s goal. Shilow Tracey is really beginning to find his feet in under 23 football, I’ve been really impressed with him in recent matches and Tuesdays match was no exception he was very good on the ball, he now has 4 goals this season. The centre half pairing of Christian Maghoma and Filip Lesniak was successful, both were solid and the former was excellent in the air. The players played well as a team and they’ll go in to next Sunday’s match against Liverpool, at Anfield with confidence.

My man of the match: For the third time in our last three matches Nathan Oduwa has been the creative force. Oduwa was brilliant against Southampton, he was without doubt the best player on the pitch getting a goal and two assists. Oduwa’s recent fine form will likely catch Pochettino’s eye.
Spurs: Glover, Walker-Peters, Muscatt, Amos (c), Maghoma, Lesniak, Miller (Goddard 74), Pritchard (Stylianides 60), Loft, Tracey, Oduwa. Substitutes (not used): Brown, Lock, McDermott (GK).

Southampton: Latham, Valery, Wood, Rowthorn, Cook, Jones (c), Willard (Olomola 46), O’Connor, Seager (Barnes 70), Slattery, Johnson. Substitutes (not used): Vokins, Smallbone, Parkes (GK).

Goals: Spurs – Oduwa 28, Jones (OG) 30, Tracey 45+2; Southampton – Seager 59.

Yellow cards: Spurs – Amos 78; Southampton – Cook 55.

Referee: Constantine Hatzidakis.
Attendance: 431.

Our under 23’s side are in action this evening, Ugo Ehiogu’s side face Southampton at the Lamex stadium in Stevenage. Since their last match on the 13th of January, three key players have been loaned out, including top scorer Shayon Harrison. However, this will allow players to move up from the under 18’s, and I reckon the prime candidates would be Kazaiah Sterling and Jack Roles. With Spurs lingering just above the relegation zone, Ehiogu will be desperate for his side to start turning their recent draws into victories. However, I’m not too concerned about us being relegated as I believe every game gives the players vital experience that will aid their development, and I see that as paramount. I will be in attendance this evening, so I will write a match report that will be published tomorrow. As for Southampton, they currently sit two points ahead of us in eight place, Martin Hunters saints side have some talented players on their books. With Will Smallbone, Olufela Olomola and Llyod Isgrove just a selection of their highly rated players.

Team news: Following the loaning out of Shayon Harrison, Connor Ogilvie and Luke Amos, there will be quite a few changes in the team tonight. I wonder if the absence of Jack Roles and Jaden Brown on Saturday for the under 18’s visit of Chelsea, will mean that they may have been included in the squad this evening. Finally, it would be great to see the talented Marcus Edwards get some game time this evening after a long injury lay off. COYS

My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Glover, Walker-Peters, Maghoma, Lesniak, Muscatt, Stylianides, Owens, Oduwa, Pritchard, Edwards, Tracey.

One to watch: Jonathan Afolabi. The tall and powerful Irish centre forward is only 16 years of age. but his a real talent and will be potent up front, if he plays this evening.

Spurs 4-3 Wycombe: My thoughts on Saturdays exhilarating cup tie

Spurs 4-3 Wycombe: My thoughts on Saturdays exhilarating cup tie

IMG_2364.JPG

83 minutes into Saturdays FA cup fourth round tie against Wycombe at the Lane, the score was two a piece. A second string Spurs side were having a terrible afternoon against the league 2 side, despite drawing level after going two goals down in the first half, Pochettino’s side were shapeless and lacking in direction. After making all three substitutes, Spurs were dealt a blow when Kieran Trippier limped off injured late on. And Gareth Ainsworth’s fearless Wycombe side didn’t alter their approach, the chairboys exposed us on the right wing as Myles Weston surged past Eric Dier before putting in an inch perfect cross which veteran striker Gary Thompson headed into the goal. At this point I was utterly distraught, I couldn’t comprehend the fact that we were only seven minutes away from crashing out of this most special of cups in our final season at the Lane. Of course we didn’t, we fought back to record a dramatic late victory to send the lane into a scene of euphoria, with Pochettino showing great relief at the touch line on the final whistle. The match was emotionally exhausting for both sets of fans, but the elation at the final whistle was something quite special, it really emphasised how important the FA Cup is to the Spurs supporters.

Son’s dramatic late winner in the 97th minute of stoppage time was superb, Son played a one two with Janssen before firing a ferocious effort from inside the box. Son’s powerful effort came off the feet of Wycombe’s Jacobsen before hitting the back of the net. However, I felt bad for Wycombe they were robbed by our premier league stars, the chairboys deserved a replay. We got lucky in the end but our winning mentality got us through the match, we were disappointing. If Pochettino decides to field his strongest eleven in the next rounds, then our name may well be on the cup! COYS

My man of the match: Son was by far the best player on the pitch, his tremendous energy and intent going forward was rewarded with two valuable goals. We have a lot to thank him for after Saturdays thriller. Son’s brace on Saturday takes his tally to 11 goals this season.

Mixed results for our under 16’s and 18’s against Chelsea on Saturday:

Mixed results for our under 16’s and 18’s against Chelsea on Saturday:

IMG_2361.JPG
Under 18’s: Our under 18’s side lost 3-2 to Chelsea yesterday afternoon at the blues Cobham training ground. John McDermott’s side played well and grew into the game as it went on, but despite their best efforts they couldn’t draw level. Their two late goals all they could manage on the day, Spurs’s goals came from forward Reo Griffith’s and midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe. Up next for our under 18’s side is the rearranged FA Youth cup fifth round tie against Norwich on Thursday.

Spurs U18s: Austin, Eyoma, Tsaroulla, Marsh (c, Skipp 77), Tanganga, Dinzeyi, Shashoua, Duncan, Sterling (Griffiths 58), Oakley-Boothe, Bennetts (Hinds 71). Substitutes (not used): Gonzalez-Velasco, Freeman (GK).

Under 16’s: It was a different story for our under 16’s as they impressively defeated Chelsea 4-2 on Saturday. Forward Jeremie Mukendie netted a brace, whilst Jamie Bowden and Phoenix Patterson also got on the score sheet. An impressive result from a such a talented group of players.

Spurs return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they face league 2 side Wycombe Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA cup. It will be a good old fashioned cup tie at the Lane, in what will be one of our last ever cup games at our beloved stadium. This tie has all the hallmarks of a classic cup tie, we go in to the match on an eight match unbeaten run but the visitors are also on a tremendous run of 16 matches unbeaten. The Chairboys will be a tough test, regardless of the huge gulf in class between the two sides, keep an eye out on Wycombe’s talented striker Scott Kashket who is a Spurs fan, him and the physical Adebayo Akinfenwa will provide the defence with plenty to do. I expect us to win this afternoons match in comfortable fashion, the FA cup is a massive, massive part of this club and I’m hoping we march on in to round in style. COYS

Team news: Spurs are without Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela through injury. However, all four could be available for Tuesdays league match against Sunderland. I think it’s quite obvious that Pochettino will rotate his squad for today’s match, I reckon Janssen will start up front whilst Nkoudou and Sissoko will also return on the wings. Photographs of Kyle Walker-Peters and Marcus Edwards in first team training were published on Friday, and both are expected to be in today’s match day squad. I’m hopeful that Walker-Peters will start at right back, I can’t sing the youngster praises high enough, he truly is a superb player and he deserves to make his first team debut more than any other player.
My predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Vorm, Walker-Peters, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Dier, Winks, Onomah, Sissoko, Nkoudou, Janssen.

My score prediction: 4-0 to Spurs courtesy of goals from Janssen x2, Sissoko and Edwards.
One to watch: The iconic veteran striker Adeabayo ‘The Beast’ Akinfnewa.

Previewing our FA youth cup 5th round tie against Norwich:

Previewing our FA youth cup 5th round tie against Norwich:

IMG_2235.JPG

Our under 18’s continue their FA youth cup run, with the home visit of Norwich tomorrow evening. The game will be played at Stevenage Boroughs home ground, the lamex stadium, and John Mcdermott’s side will be looking to continue their fine run of form when they face the canaries on Tuesday evening. After two comprehensive victories in rounds three and four, the young Lillywhites haven’t really been tested thus far, although they have been in very good form in the under 18 premier league so far this season. Tomorrows match will provide a stern test for this talented group of players, Norwich have a good academy set up and have some talented players in their ranks. Left winger Glenn Middleton is a real talent, I saw him play against our under 21’s side at the Lane last season, the then schoolboy was superb on the wing his a really tricky winger and a big prospect. In addition, striker Benny Ashley-Seal is another one to watch, along with Middleton he has featured in the canaries under 23 side this season and will provide a threat up top. However, our under 18’s side are one of the best in the country and I feel as if they have the ability to go all the way this year, and get their hands on the trophy. The last time Spurs won the FA Youth cup was in 1990, after defeating Middlesbrough 3-2 on aggregate.

Players that were part of that victorious youth team include, Ian Walker, Warren Hackett, Neil Smith and Scott Houghton. Our current youth side are a real joy to watch, they play fast attacking football. This team has so much talent and it would be brilliant for the club as well as the players, if they could go all way in this most prestigious of youth competitions. Norwich will be a tough test, our under 18’s have already lost 3-2 to them this season however, I reckon we have enough quality to progress to the quarter finals. I will be at the match tomorrow evening however I’m hoping that tomorrows match will go ahead. Youth matches at Colchester united and Dagenham and Redbridge’s ground were postponed today due to a frozen pitch, fingers crossed that won’t be the case tomorrow. COYS
My team prediction: Whiteman, Eyoma, Tanganga, Dinzeyi, Tsaroulla, Marsh, Duncan, Shashoua, Roles, Griffiths, Sterling.

Some thoughts on Saturdays dramatic 2-2 draw with Man City:

Some thoughts on Saturdays dramatic 2-2 draw with Man City:
“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is.” (Danny Blanchflower)

IMG_2326.JPG

What an emotionally exhausting match it was on Saturday evening in Manchester, as Spurs fought back from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw against Man City. It was a game in which we were second best for the most part, we were off our usual pace, lacking in intensity and looked uncomfortable on the ball. However, Pochettino’s side showed resilience as well as a fighting spirit, to gain a valuable point that keeps us in the title race ahead of two winnable league fixtures, against Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively. We were torn to shreds by Pep Guardiola’s side for a large chunk of the game, it was always a case of when, not if city would take the lead. City’s dominance was rewarded early in the second half, when they scored two goals in the space of five minutes, both goals coming as a result of two unfortunate errors from goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. We were being kept out of the game by a very good side, but not a side that we couldn’t defeat. Despite our poor performance we showed just how strong a side we really are, as Dele Alli headed the ball into the back of the net on the hour mark, and Spurs were inspired. We battled out the last half an hour showing great determination and courage, we were still second best. However, we had a go, we were fearless going forward. The introduction of Son provided much needed pace down the flanks, and 13 minutes from time Son scored what would eventually be the equaliser.

We had been second best and I’m not sure many would have backed us to get back into the game after being 2-0 down, but we did it! We sit third in the table after wins from Arsenal and Chelsea extended the gap at the top of the table. The truth of the matter is, that Man City deserved to the win the game, they dominated possession and had seven shots on goal to our two. Yesterday’s draw was a bonus point, I wonder if the match will be yet another turning point in our season and with winnable fixtures ahead, that point could prove to be imperative come the end of the season. I’m hoping Alderweireld’s injury is nothing to worry about, the Belgian centre back was immense whilst he was on the field, he saved us from being further behind. It is clear that Wimmer struggled yesterday, being taken off at half time. Wimmer has been lacking in game time but I’m hopeful that he will become sharper in the coming games. Finally, I’ve got to mention the impact that Son had on yesterday’s game, his pace and desire to go forward was clear to see. His composed finish from inside the penalty area was the reason we came back with a point. This team have a real hunger for success, despite salvaging a dramatic point the players were downbeat, they wanted to win! COYS

My man of the match: For me it has to be Danny Rose. Rose put his body on the line as he made some vital interceptions, including a world class challenge on Raheem Sterling in the Tottenham penalty area. As courageous as ever, Rose took a right clattering on many an occasion, his power and skill going to show just how good of a player he is.

Spurs versus Man City: Can we do the double over Pep’s side?

Spurs versus Man City: Can we do the double over Pep’s side?

IMG_2320.JPG

Spurs have won seven matches on the trot and Mauricio Pochettino’s confident side are starting to show signs that they could better their third placed finish of last season. This evening they come up against Pep Guardiola’s side, at the Etihad stadium, a team which Pochettino’s side beat 2-0 at the Lane back in October. Although Guardiola’s side have failed to live up to the high expectations thus far, the sky blues are a team of undeniable quality. Their 4-0 dismantling at the hands of Everton last weekend, was probably the worst thing that could have happened for Spurs ahead of Saturday evenings match. I know for a fact that Guardiola’s side will be no where near as open as they were at Goodison park on Sunday. Although we can most certainly expose their defensive vulnerability, city are likely to be much more defensive this evening. However they present one of the most dangerous attacks in the league, with the likes of Agüero, De Bruyne and David Silva likely to send a shiver down the spine of the Spurs defence.

Pochettino will be relishing the challenge ahead, and us Spurs fans will not be lacking in belief ahead of this evenings game and I’m sure the players won’t be either. Can we do the double over one of the leagues most talented sides? Of course we can this is the best Spurs side of the last few decades, I needn’t state the obvious that this side are special but at the same time it’s suiting our players that there is not a great deal of hype. I’ll make a bold prediction that the lads will run out 3-1 winners this evening, I think it’s going to be another fantastic attacking display. with Eriksen and Kane at the heart of it. COYS
