Some notes on Spurs loanee Anthony Georgiou’s performance against UB Conquense:
Spurs youngster and Cyprus international Anthony Georgiou (22) played 72 minutes of Spanish club Atlético Levante’s 1-1 draw with UB Conquense earlier today. Georgiou made his seventh competitive appearance of the season for the Spanish Segunda Division B Group III side, and the Lewisham born winger put in another very positive performance for the ‘ Granotas ‘ at the Ciudad Deportiva De Buñol. Anthony started Sunday mornings game out on the left wing as Luis Tevenet’s side lined up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation. Georgiou started the game well and after pouncing on a loose ball out on the left flank the speedy winger sprinted past a Conquense player before then knocking the ball past Márquez and continuing towards the penalty area where he was intercepted by Maxi. A couple of minutes later Anthony played a corner kick short to Quintana who then passed the ball to Fran Manzanara inside the box however, the Levante defender fired an effort wide of the Conquense goal. Young Anthony continued to be involved in the game during the early stages and after he had a whipped cross into the Conquense penalty area cleared by a defender, Georgiou continued to be menacing out on the left flank. After USA international Shaq Moore delivered a low cross into the danger zone from the right wing he almost managed to pick out Georgiou who had made a good run towards the back post. However, a Conquense defender was on hand once again to get the ball clear, then a couple of moments later Anthony latched onto Rulo’s pass out wide before advancing forward and clipping the ball into the danger zone but the ball was eventually cleared. Around five minutes later Anthony delivered another good corner kick into the box, but it was headed narrowly over the crossbar by Levante centre forward Juan Delgado. After Manzarana picked out Georgiou on the left flank, the Cyprus international did well to control the ball before pumping it into the danger zone where it was gathered by Conquense goalkeeper Marqueta. The visitors took a slightly surprising lead in the 36th minute of the game through Maxi after the centre half managed to head home from Lozano’s free kick.
The ‘ Granotas ‘ pushed for an equaliser and the positive running of Anthony Georgiou was helping Luis Tevenet’s side out. A low cross from Shaq Moore managed to find its way to Georgiou inside the Conquense penalty area. He attempted to get around Márquez before having his resulting effort on goal blocked by Miros who managed to get in front of him in time. Anthony’s resulting corner kick was headed away by the same player. After receiving Benktib’s pass down the left side of the oppositions penalty area Georgiou was in a lot of space but the pass which he received had far too much pace on it for him to control it. Anthony put his head in his hands as he knew that if the pass had been better then he probably would have scored. The Lewisham born winger continued to be one of Levante’s most influential attacking players. After being given the ball by Benktib on the left flank Georgiou managed to jink past Conquense defender Márquez before sending a low cross into the penalty area. He had managed to pick out Delgado but the Levante striker could only flick the ball across goal. Anthony’s final involvement of the half came from a corner kick which he whipped into the danger zone however, it was cleared by a Conquense defender at the near post. Although the Spurs loanee wasn’t as involved in the game during the second half he still managed to have a positive impact on the match. After doing well to keep Rulo’s long pass in play, Georgiou whipped a hopeful ball into the Conquense penalty area but it was cleared behind for a corner kick by Miros. The resulting corner kick was played short to Georgiou and the Spurs man whipped another good ball into the box where he managed to pick out Delgado, who glanced a header just wide of the mark. Levante managed to find an equaliser a couple of minutes later after Shaq Moore fired an unstoppable effort past Marqueta on the half volley from the edge of the Conquense penalty area. Anthony was left unhappy after his teammate Cantero decided to have a shot on goal, despite the fact that Georgiou had managed to find a good pocket of space for himself inside the opponents penalty area shortly afterwards.
The Cyprus international turned playmaker after he managed to slip an intelligent pass through to substitute Joel down the left flank. Joel surged forwards before stopping on the edge of the penalty area and curling the ball over Marqueta’s crossbar. Anthony played the next five or so minutes of the game out on the right flank before he was brought off in the 72nd minute of the game for Joan. Once again the young Spurs winger managed to give another positive account of himself in a game in which the home side never really turned up for. Georgiou saw plenty of the ball out on the left flank and his well timed runs, dangerous whipped crosses, good tracking back and his willingness to take players on were just some of the many positives which the 22 year old can take away from today’s game. Anthony and Atlético Levante are in league action again next Sunday when they take on Barcelona B at the Mini Estadi.
